Title: 90g Redo
Post by: Nick on February 03, 2012, 02:36:03 AM
I must have fallen and hit my head.... so the thought is, if I cant trade off my 90g tank I might put something like a couple of oscars in it....any other suggestions? Maybe fronts....or even maybe Paratilapia Polleni/bleekeri.

IMHO, with the oscars or the frontosa you will still need to upgrade to a bigger tank in the long run. As you probably already know, the frontosa are slow growers and will be a longer inhabitant if you start with small ones. The oscars on the other hand are fast growers and will outgrow a 90g a lot faster.
Besides, I hate to see any fellow member NOT UPGRADE to a bigger tank  :D :D :D

A 90 would be good for 1 fish that gets 12".
So, as long as your Oscar or Bleekeri/ Polleni is kept singularly,  you'll be good.

The frontosa thing i was thinking might be a good idea...for the growing slow process...the paratilapia dont grow too terribly fast either. Plus im farily sure i could actually keep just 2 in a tank. 1 male 1 female. Would be neat to breed them but I dont think i could ever sell enough of the young...unless I can talk the LFS and Soldans into it....hahah...most likely not.

And dont worry. Even if I dont trade the 90g I will still be upgrading to something with a 6' footprint sometime this year.

Thanks for the suggestion about Larry but after spending several hundred...more like a few thousand on fish and supplies over the course of a few years I asked for help about medicating some sick fish with ick. He told me he wouldnt help me cause he thought I bought from another place in town...which i had not...I didnt care that they were sick. I know that sometimes stuff just happens. He insisted that I did buy from someone else and basically told me it wasnt his problem if it came from another place. I pleaded with him tell him it was not from anywhere else and further more i dont care if the disease came from his store or not...i just wanted some helpful info and was more than willing to pay for the medication. He acted like i was attacking him and was saying his fish were sick. It couldnt have been further from the case. I simply had a outbreak and had never had it before. that was 5 years ago and I havnt been back since. The sad thing is that some of the best looking fish i ever got came from him. Ive racked my brain more than one time trying to figure out why he snapped on me like that and I couldnt figure it it. Either way I wont go back. 2 minutes of words and a sale of some medication and he would have still had my business and the thousands I have spend on fish/supplies since then. I guess we both lose.

I totally agree with you. IMO, regardless of where you got your fish, a store should be willing to give you info and sell you the proper medication to help get through your issue. You'd think a good LFS would take the opportunity to not only help you and your fish but hopefully gain a loyal customer in the process. That's a poor business and hobbyist decision in my book.

My fiance would love that. Too bad she wont let me put it in the Living Room. Depending on how much money I make at the auction I might have to sell it though to get enough money for a 6' tank.

I have been thinking about a 90gallon tank redo of my own. Im probly just gonna move my current fish around tho. I really think i would like to get/find some drift wood of some sort. Maybe, the brown water ive heard some speak about is sorta a concern of mine. Anyone ever use driftwood from a local lake or river before? Im sure i have asked in the past. ::) ::)

I have. I used several pieces from local rivers and a few from Mullet Lake. I put mine in the shower in tubs and rinsed with water over and over again...also boiling water. Worked fine...a bit of brown for a few months than it was done.

Personally, paratilapia polleni, "small spot" look amazing, have great personality, and a single make would be nice to see with some live plants, or a colony of pictus cats

Thank you, ive been thinking of using some for quite a while now, since our natural resources of it are so plentiful. Just gotta find some of the right pieces now for the tank. 8)

I know a few people that actually go down the river every summer 4-5 times a year in canoes with saws and get hand fulls for their own tanks and some to condition and sell.

That does sound nice. I already got rid of the 90 and now have a 150 with Illangi in it right now. I've never tried a planted tank but want to do one real soon. Just sucks cause I have some really hard well water and I don't have the space for a large water treatment tank at the moment.
