Forums are a bit dead lately and I'm horribly bored at work. Recently I've been infatuated with finding fish that other people arnt breeding here in Michigan or at least not very often or fish you just don't see a lot. Now I've only been in the hobby a little over a year so maybe some of you old dogs could chip in and talk about the good olde days.
So basicly i just want to chat about some of the harder to find/breed malawi fish in michigan.
I believe i have the only group of johanasejohanse on the forums what do you all keep and think is "rare" around here or maybe you believe you are the only one breeding a specific species in your area.
Also maybe post a a fish you really want to get your hands on.
Mine cytotilapia lion "lions cove"

Great subject!!!!
I have made somewhat of a crazy wish list and have found most of them that I have wanted others though I have not even heard not seen around at all at least where I have been looking like this one Lethrinops sp. "Red Cap" (Itungi)
I would love to get my hands on some of these or a few tropheops like the red cheek or yellow chin.
I do have a peacock that I picked up from another member that he said was not as common the Aulonocara stuartgranti (Chiloelo)
He has color like a red shoulder but it doesn't go all the way up I thinks he is a pretty good looking fish

what are johanasejohanse?
In my experience it all depends on where you live. Up here what is super common isn't much so down there as it is here but thats the glory of this site... For example I saw recently someone got a group of midnight molotos and I can find those up here pretty commonly. Ones Ive been looking for are: Aulonocara saulosi, Aulonocara Chitande Type Masinje, aulonocara kandeense,Aulonocara Trematocranus Masinje, Copadichromis verduyni, Mylochromis guentheri,Mylochromis lateristriga, and Lethrinops Mbawa Black Fin.

Labidachromis Joanjohnsonae I'm sure there not like scarce or rare I just haven't seen them at any auctions or on fish lists.

Melanochromis
Yes, Melanochromis Experatus, Melanochromis Joanjohnsonae. Then there's Labidochromis Textilus.
I'd have to look it all up, but I believe there are 2 different species called Experatus. One being the Melanochromis Joanjohnsonae & the other Labidochromis Textilus
BTW - the rarest Malawi I'm keeping is Metriaclima Hayjomaylandi. But, I know of 2 other people in Michigan who have them also.
-
Melanochromis mpoto
-
I have chitande type north and mylochromis ericotaenia manda rarest I have.

I have a cyathopharynx furcifer, which used to be labeled under the same name but got changed. Really hoping it's a male

It's not too bad actually. He was in a tang. Tank and was too small for the rest of the fish In there, so I put him in my mbuna tank and he does pretty well. He doesn't bother anyone and nobody bothers him

Now I've only been in the hobby a little over a year so maybe some of you old dogs could chip in and talk about the good olde days.
The rare ones from the "good olde days" either became common, because people like them, or almost obsolete, because people didn't like them. :P
All in all, there are ebbs and flows to what is common, what is rare, and what is sought after.
For anyone disappointed that there aren't more uncommon or rare species (Malawians in particular) at auctions, look in the mirror. The quality of what's there results from what's chosen by those who bring fish in the first place. :)
