I'm sure a lot of you have seen this before, but this is all new to me, my ruby green male is trying to breed. It's the funniest sight ever. He's chasing the ladies around and flashing his tail. None of the ladies seem to want anything to do with him. Does this mean they will soon? They are his same size (about 2 inches) if at least the male is wanting to breed is this a good sign?
-
Breeding is always a good sign. In most of my african groups the males are almost always shaking, dancing and chasing before the females are ready. They'll come around.
-
Ok, I just didn't know if males were always wanting to get I on, and females sometimes never will? I guess if he's in the mood they must be happy? I'd live to watch them spawn as this is all new to me.
-
The females will come around. But yes, the males always want to get it on. It's in the genes. Lol. ;)
-
very similar to some human males, keep enticing and wearing them down, sooner or later the females will respond.
-
You guys are funny... Sometimes it never works for the human males and gets a restraining order slapped on them or some stalking charge. I guess guys get that too! Holy typos in my last post!

just make sure you don't go pouring vodka into your tank. :P

I totally did just one shot of vodka in the tank! And guess who's holdin lol couldn't get a good pic and didnt want to harass her too much. She is not overly full, and I'm not going to have huge expectations. What do I do now? Just leave her alone? I suspect that she won't hold long since its first time.

You can do 2 thing leave her or if you have a 10 gal you can put her in there for 14 to 28 days to wait for her to spit or you can take the babies from her on the 14th day.

If I leave her in the tank, will the babies get eaten? Will I have to feed them special?

the female lays the eggs, has them fertilized by the male and takes them into her mouth to hold for several weeks until which time the eggs hatch and the fry are ready to be released. Typically, females hold from 2-4 weeks. During this time, the female eats very little or nothing at all. You can tell she is holding by looking at her enlarged buccal cavity (throat area) and her mostly closed mouth. The eggs hatch at around 1 week and develop into fry. At around 2 weeks, the fry have pretty much absorbed their egg sacs that provide them with nutrition during their first stages of life.

Once she's no longer holding them actively, take her out or she'll eventually eat them.
Will I have to feed them special?
IME crushed flake food works great. Depending on the size of a tank you have, sometimes I think it's better to have the fry in a breeder net until they are ~.75"-1" because it cuts down on food waste. Confining them close to the food helps them find it quicker and keeps it from getting pulled into filters before they've had a chance to consume it.
Congrats on the success!

Thanks for all the advice! I have a second female holding! I'm going to have fish coming out my ears. What do I do with them all?!? LoL

Put the 2 holding females in a divided 10 gallon.

I meant all these fry :) I mean, of course, if they are successful! Getting ahead of myself I guess haha!

Oh lol u will need a grow out tank. I like to use 20 longs for when there small but as they grow I like to use 36" tank for when my fry are starting to bully each other.

I know I've asked this question before, but what is a stress free way of pulling a holding female out of a larger decorated tank. The last couple of times I tried by pulling out the decorations, and still stressed the female out so she spit in the tank. I only had a few fry survive by hiding in holey rock.

Take all the decor out and wait for her to calm down then try to catch her.

I've tried that. I must not be too skilled in netting. :o
The 48"long tank has a support bar in the middle. They are smart and go from 1 side to the other. I did get a bigger net. Maybe I'll try that next time. I've heard about trying to get them while sleeping. That would be interesting, going into work at night and trying to get them out.
Maybe I need night vision goggles. lol

I pulled both my females out and put them in a breeder net. They didnt spit at all. They seemed more stressed in the net. So I let them back in the tank. I figured I'd just let them take care of fry and let nature take its course. I'm not set up with a fry tank yet and have no clue what I would even do with all the babies. Got 12 in my 60 gallon as it is... Maybe you should pull them as soon as you know they are holding? Maybe they are so hungry after a week or two they can't handle the stress... I don't know? Just a thought...

Just got another larger net, so will try next time I see someone holding.

Kaia, pull the females and then put them in a net breeder. Leave the fry there til they're about an inch maybe a little less. I'm sure if you put them up on here, plenty of people would be interested. A few stores may take them also. The store I work at may be interested. Let me know
-
I put them in a net... They were freaking out and seemed more stressed than in the tank. I also pulled my dominant male to see the colors on the sub. Dominant male. The dominant male lost all color in about an hour haha! Now the sub colors up all the time, provided he's near a lady and the Dom doesn't see him. I'm sure since these ladies are holding (and they seem to be doing a fine job) that they will do it again many times over. By the next time I hope to have a 10 gallon fry tank up and running. I'm just trying to do so much. I want to get a couple sponges up and running in my tanks too. Seems the LFS haven't even heard about or sell what I'm looking for?!? Nothing local to me (and there is a lot of them) sells anything special. Doubt they'd be interested in some awesome ruby greens lol
-
Also my females come out at feeding time and join the others, but don't eat. (Which I understand) but I feel so bad for them :(

don't feel bad it's what they do in the wild.
-
Haha, ok. The sponges will probably have to be ordered online. I bought mine off amazon.

3 females now holding. I noticed the first female holding one week ago yesterday! Ugh! At least another week.

Yes

Current photo of my dominant male! Sub doms head to the left.

I'm not so sure about those, if you want I can make some room in my tanks and take them off your hands for ya.
-
Hahaha! I have 3 females holding. So I will have some fry I hope.
-
Ok, I take it back. The 3rd lady to hold is no longer holding. She must have swallowed the eggs? The original 2 are still holding.
