Not my best week of fish keeping
« on: March 19, 2012, 12:14:59 AM »
Earlier in the week I noticed my 120 was losing water.  Just my HOB filter leaking.  Fixed it but lost about 10 to 15 gallons on the floor.

Saturday realized my pleco tank heater failed.  The tank is in the same room as the 120 that leaked and I left the window wide open to air things out.  Tank temp got down to 62.  Lost a BUNCH of the smaller 144's in the tank.  Luckily it looks like the breeders are okay.

Today another tank had a HOB filter issue causing about 10 gallons of water to go on the floor.

UGHH.

Sounds like you better check your other HOBs before it's too late!  :o

I once had an o-ring go bad on a HOB filter and it started to drip water from the seal. I found a suitable replacement at Home Depot, but you had to buy a package of something like 15 or 25 .... way more than 1! Initially annoyed about $5-$7 for the single o-ring I needed, I quickly realized it'd be best to just replace the o-rings on all my HOBs. Money well spent is how I view it now.  8)

The filter on the 120 was a returned item that had a cracked case.  I siliconed the case over the crack and apparently that is not a permanent solution, however it did work for a few months.

The other filter issue was completely due to neglect.  I apparently didn't clean it out the past few times doing water changes.  The filter basket pushed the top up and it got clogged forcing some of the water over the side.

Neither issue was one of my finer moments.

Sounds like it's time to switch over to sumps. Way less hassels, and a breeze to clean. Too many more benefits to be ignored.

It just sucks all around. A while back while re-arranging tanks and cleaning. I sorta forgot to put the intake end back on for my 120, and it cost me about 4 or 5 fish. I hate when things go wrong like that and its my own fault.
