Fenbendazole - Fish De-wormer
« on: March 01, 2015, 05:47:00 PM »
I recently had a couple of clown loaches with "skinny disease" and while researching medications, decided on fenbendazole since it's applied to food and distributed directly to the fish, rather than using a treatment where medication amount is based on the water volume of the tank. I was also able to treat some larger cichlids I bought that were in quarantine, just in case they picked up something in their past tanks.

It worked out well and the loaches are gaining weight again, but I over-bought on meds and have some extra available.

I have packets of 100% pure fenbendazole available, in which each packet treats 4oz of food. The packets are dated as good through January 2017.

Packets are $3ea or 5/$10.

IIRC, that is the active ingredient in Panacur which is used to deworm dogs.
I believe it works well on Planaria worms and hydra in aquariums too.

I know that it is what's in Panacur for sure. I saw some recommendations on buying that and crushing it up to feed fish, but getting the dosage amount wasn't easy. I went for the pre-measured packets of the active ingredient instead. It could be used for dogs, cats, or other larger animals (cue goat comments), but I can't tell you how it should be applied in those circumstances.

I actually just quarantined a fish today that has a sunken belly, and began treating it with metronidazole.  Do you think your stuff would work better? Also, if unaffected fish are treated, would it harm them? I was thinking of treating the whole tank in case it spread but wasn't sure.

Metronidazoles primary use is for the treatment of anaerobic gram positive and some negative bacteria including those that produce beta-lactamase. I've seen that Metronidazole is sometimes effective for protozoan parasite infections (icy, heximita, etc). It's also sometimes effective for some internal parasites such as nematodes. Some internal parasites it's not effective for include camallanus worms.

Fenbendazole will treat internal parasites including camallanus worms. Fenbendazole is also considered a safer alternative to another powerful de-wormer, Levamisole. It will also treat planaria and hydra as previously mentioned.

"Working better" will depend on what it really is. If it's bacterial at all (though I don't think so), metro would be a better choice. If it's internal parasites, I think Fenbendazole would be better so long as your fish will accept foods. It needs to be ingested to work well.

I don't think it would harm healthy fish. As a precaution I've been treating all of my tanks with fish larger than 2" (I'm mixing it with 1mm NLS - not sure it'd be effective to feed to fish which can't ingest an entire pellet). For treatment I'm feeding treated food for 3 days straight, then wait 10 days and repeat treatment. When treating, it's suggested to syphon out the fish waste and potentially ejected worms/parasites daily.

If you have some left, I'd like two packets.  I'll be at the meeting this Friday, as well.

^ I set some aside for all of you as requested for pickup at the meeting and 1 for eitakppurk.

If anyone else is interest, I probably have ~10 packets left.

If anyone else is interested, the MCA monthly meeting tonight is probably the best chance to pick some up. I'm not making special trips to meet anyone since I'm basically selling these at cost, as a benefit to members of the club.

Just wanted to say thanks Ron, my cyprichromis is still thin but is eating without spitting her food out now, so I'm hoping she will pull through! Treated the community tanks too and all the fish ate except the altolamps ( I added garlic but they were still not buying it). Anyhow so far so good!
