Crushed Oyster Shell's

I'm wondering if anyone has every used this sort of thing as a mixture in with there gravel. It is just "chicken feed" from Tractor Supply, but if you can use it it, or anyone has used it. I think it will look really nice in the tank with natural gravel. I have some mixture in one tank that is Crushed coral which is what gave me the idea for it. Anyway, thanks in advance..

I'd thought about doing it after buying CaribSea African Cichlid Mix gravel once, which appears to have shells mixed into it as well. Ever since then I've only done sand in my tanks and I think it'd look silly mixed with sand.

I woild bet it would be really dirty.

I see. My recollection is that the oyster shells were sold as a pure supplement. Been a while since I bought a bag, as I've only been raising broilers recently.

I have read a lot of other forums and post that say they use it in their tanks, I haven't gotten p the guts to try it.

i started out using crushed oyster shell when i first got into rift lake cichlids 40 years ago...it is unbelievably dirty....and it will get really compacted.....
what is actually easier and cheaper is to grab a shovel and a few 5 gallon buckets and going to your local landscape supply and getting some #10 or smaller if they have it crushed limestone....i think i pay about $25.00 per ton..so i fill a few 5 gallon buckets for about 4 or 5 bucks...and it keeps the PH just right for the africans...

Raising chickens or fish here?  lol.  Crushed coral would it be a cheaper solution?

hmmmmm...i don't see it mighties.....crushed coral is 50 - 75 cents a pound...crushed oyster shell is about $10 for a 50 lb. bag...and crushed limestone is less than $30 per ton...i would think that the limestone is the most economical way to go...
