140 gallon tank - 1 species - what is it?
« on: November 26, 2014, 10:23:02 AM »
OK, has to fit my criteria...

-have to have some size to them.  5-6 inches
-color is a must.  MUST HAVE COLOR
-I tend to like the more aggressive fish
-I dont want one fish with color and 5-6 gray fish
-nothing that is real common

Oscar like personality is a plus.  But, I dont want Oscars.

I dont care about breeding.  If they do, great.  If not... I dont care one bit.

Nothing that requires soft water or low pH.  Which pretty much rules out Amazons.

Any suggestions?

How many fish would you like?

Like Dan said,  carpintis is a good one. But, eventually it'll end up being only a pair.  So,  if you want a group (long term) you'll have to go with a species from the Thorichthys or Astatheros genuses.

Green Terrors.. I know they are fairly common, but a tank full of them is absolutely amazing.. I have a buddy that has a 200g species tank with terrors.
Archocentrus red panamense are awesome.

Not set on quantity yet.  But, I would like a half dozen.

But for a perfect fish, I could go with two.  But large ones.

A number of years ago Oyers kept some and I saw them a handful of times. Does that count as experience?
FWIW, they never were able to get a successful hatch IIRC and like most of the featherfin types, they only show the best of their best coloration immediately before or during spawning. They were pretty, but they wouldn't look like that picture all of the time.
