« on: January 06, 2014, 07:58:40 PM »
The Temp right now in Livonia is like -2 and -23 with the wind chill at 16mph...

At 8am the temp is supposed to drop to -12 and -36 with wind chill.  This is some crazy weather!

haven't seen this in long time...

I keep hearing these creepy quiet popping noises coming from the roof.  :o

 Everyone else doing okay?

P.S. SO glad I got my Generator up and running smoothly.

Luckily the voices in my head drown out the quiet noises from the attic :P

It's actually good that it is getting so cold,  it will turn that heavy wet snow into light powdery snow which results in less stress on the roof....

But the good thing is that the Addition where I have 10 tanks of 507 gallons totaling a gross weight of 4228.38 lbs on 2nd floor as built only about 15 years ago. So I could probably fit that much weight on one wall.
Just did a little research and found out that a single vertical standing 2x4 can withstand some 4000 lbs and a room made of 2x10's at 16" centers (coding between some 10-35 years old) can withstand some 2000lbs + at any giving point. A room of 2x12's at 12" centers (coding after 2004) And most of the tanks are on the walls, Except for 2x40g breeders and 50g breeder all at the same spot within a 6.5' x 1.5 section towards the middle of the room.

Most fo the snow started off nice and powder like. The second half though was a bit more wet like you said. I'm sure it will be fine. MSN Weather is saying that the humidity is like 75%

S needless to say, I think that were good to go.

Andrew, were those static weights? As best I recall there is a significant difference between what the weight a floor can hold and the weight a floor can hold over an extended period of time.

I'm assuming that the Joist data is probably Dynamic weight.

But the 2x4 vertical compression strength seems to be accurate.

I'm still trying to figure out who's using 2 x 12's 12" on center as code ;D

I know right. lol

Depends on the Span of the 2x12's. But from what I've read it's only been since about 2004.

But if the max safe span is to far for the build at 16 OC's they will move it to 12 OC's to increase the load capabilities.

Code for spans up to 14' is 2 x 10's at 16" on center.  Typically, the only reason you'd use 2 x 12's is to eliminate steel (I beam supports) in the basement.  Even then, it would have to be a really long span to go to 12" on center.  At that point, it would probably make more sense to use floor trusses instead of 2 x 12's
