I might just upgrade to a FX5, seems foolish to have 3 or 4 filters on 1 tank.

For better or for worse. Its a toss up. If you have a backup its all good. Seems to me the advantage of running multiple filters is if one goes down you aren't S$#T out of luck lol. The fx5 looks beastly. I have seen a few of those babies in action. Ya just never know. I run a Fluval canister filter, a sponge and a HOB all on same tank. Each to its advantage. less tank maintenance. Downside is when its time to clean em all.

I Mcguivered my 2 questionable cans today and they're good as new now. Petrolium jelly is the duct tape of can filters it seems

Only thing to watch is that if you got any on the seals you may have leaks down the road...I seem to have read that petroleum based products can deteriorate seals.  Just something to keep an eye on...probably not an immediate issue.  If it's like my canister it should be no issue because the seals are far enough away from the impeller/impeller shaft it would be hard to get it on both.

I thought the whole point was to put it right on the gaskets

You use a silicone lube on o rings and gaskets. Makes a better seal and doesn't rot the rubber.

FWIW, sometimes vaseline can deteriorate some rubbers. I don't recall specifically which, so I just try to avoid using it in general. For my HOT I just dip the rubber seals in water when I put it together.
