Member locator by ZIP
« on: October 21, 2013, 10:59:21 AM »
I am a new member, but very familiar with how this site works. Was past member on a few saltwater forums. But it would be cool if there was a way you could view a map of michigan and put in a zip code and it would bring up the closest members to you. Any info after that you could PM the user. This way trading, buying/selling, and just for general knowledge would be easier. Sometimes its nice to see someone else's set up or DIY projects.

Most of the members do add thier zip code in thier profile - see at bottom.  If someone was/is computer savy,  they could possible take all of those zips, and then flag them up into a map...

That would be very cool !

But I would not want a knock on my door at say 3am from Omar after a night drinking his favorite Bourbon,  wanting to come see my fish !   LMAO !

"Familiar" as in this individual site or SMF?

LOL After the wrong kind of fish at 3 am if the case LMAO. Hope your not running that kind of business.  HAHA, but thats why I stated that it would be by zip code and the rest would be up to PM between the users. I live in the middle of Michigan. Hard to find people close with same interest, and who knows could be on the same street. I have to drive almost an hour away to have access to a good selection of fish or supplies. COME ON COMPUTER SAVVY INDIVIDUAL. MAKE THE MAP PLEASE. LOL

Close to same set up and same rules.

Still sell saltwater corals for my friends that are highly known on these sites as well. Also help them run their tables at swaps. Cichlids have always been an interest for me though. I am finally making a jump for it. Must say it seems fun so far.

I'm comfortable with putting my zip/city (in fact I have) but I'm not going to put my address publicly.  I'd be OK with a map but my best guess from observing similar things/a little website experience is that it would require Marty or whoever's running the backend of the site to install a plugin to allow the map.  And possibly consent from the members, not sure.

A mod / plugin would have to be installed.  I don't know offhand if there is one for this board software.
I also don't know how much work would be involved with over 400 members already on the site.

Wouldnt have to be exact address.  If it would just map the zip codes, that would get you close enough.

A motorcycle board I was on did this.  I have no idea how though... that was a while ago.  It was pretty nice.

GLA had/has a member map where the member puts there own 'dot's where they want. I think it was just a board plug in, but not 100% on that. Maybe Joefish will chime in.
