Just outta curiosity - you have to suspend the light over the tank to control the heat exchange to the glass tops - right ?

Usually the necessity to suspend the lights depends on the heat output of the ballast(s)/lights themselves. T8s are one of the cooler operating lights.

I did this to my light for a planted tank and it works great, its super easy and this little guy puts out about 2200- 2600 lumens. They're CFLs so the run cool and last a long time. Just thought I'd share my budget setup I've made a few and they only take about ten minutes.
I have about 18,000 rounds of .223 I'm  looking to get rid of, 100 rd bags. 1-4 bags $40 ea, 5-9 bags $38 ea, 10 or more bags $35 ea. I can't put this in the for sale section, its not fish related. No shipping.

I have these on a 20L, but how well does it work on large tanks?? I also need a good light setup for a 135!

I did the same as Trailer Park Fishtanks demonstrates above; using CFLs and wiring them right into an old florescent hood.  They are cool and put out tons of light.  I took it one step further and wired in a blue LED flat nightlight ($3?) so that I have a 'moonlight' at night.  Not that the plants or fish in that tank needed it, I just like the glow when watching a movie at night with the lights off.
