Lab help

I bought a 4" yellow lab Sat, he's been picked on for the past two days. Today I finally took him and put him in a 20gL wheres he 1 of 2 fish, now the past 4 hrs he's swimming upside down besides the upside down swim he seems fine......but he seems like his swim bladder or something is messed up? Any thoughts maybe whats up with him?

Too much stress or beating possibly...he may just be too far gone.  I have had fish do that ...not apparently infection because it happened too quickly...but similar symptoms.

I hope not but you may be right, I been watchin him for the past hour, it's like his swim bladder is messed up or something. He seems okay, but swimming upside down :-\

Have you fed him since you have gotten it? What did it eat before? It may be a digestive problem. You can fast him for a few days and watch.

If you think it's bladder infection, you can treat. But is a single yellow lab worth it?

I would just turn out the lights, and check on him tomorrow. Maybe it is just stress hopefully.

Yep I've tried feeding him both 1mm pellets and veggie flakes, he/she wont take them. I hope it makes it through the night but not looking good. If by chance he/she does make it and gets back to good health, I'll offer it for free to good home here because I don't want to see him get beat up again in my tanks.

Yellow labs are very docile, and at the same time, very resilient. but they can not take constant abuse, and him being a lone lab, makes him more of a target I think.

Did you get it from someone, or an LFS? can they take it back, if it survives?

If I lived close to you, I would take him as is. I got lots of empty tanks.

I got it from the LFS on Saturday. I thought since it was going into my 55g Mbuna tank which already had three 3" labs (this one is 4") that it would be okay, but nope :(

To follow up on the above post...


I thought maybe since I added the lab "alone" that maybe was the issue. So I brought home another 4" lab and another 3" Cherry red ...put them both in a few hrs ago, they both hold their own no prob and are fine. Seems just the one lab is the prob. I had to remove it before I even had the other two accimated because it was looking so bad.

EVERYONE dude...seriously. I watched my 2.5" OB Peacock, my 6" zebras, all 3 cherry red zebras, you name it, they all where chasing/biting him for some reason.

I just went down and looked at him. He's completely unside down, breathing fine but upside down all the time now. Should I just euthanize him now maybe? I hate to see him/her suffer.

I appreciate any advice.

If he is not showing any outward sign of distress, I would just let it play out.

Give him 24 hours or more. Turn the tank lights out, and check every now and then.

BTW the funny thing is I know he was picked on because he was added as a single fish, so this evening I added another 4" lab plus a 3" Cherry Red Zebra just in hopes the aggression would be spread over 3 new fish rather than just one. Oddly enough, the two others I added were completely 100% accepted in the tank like they have always been there.
