rena xp3 question
« on: January 02, 2013, 01:06:39 PM »
I have a rena xp3 hooked up to my 125 and I feel it isnt pushing water out like other cansiters filters I have seen.

Is there a maximum distance the intake and out take house have to be?

I have sponges and bi-media in it over the four layers/trays.

When I had my magnum 350 hooked up it was pushing water out so hard it was leaving ripples in the water.

I have a couple of fluval's that are smaller and on other tanks and they are pushing water harder.

Everything is sealed and tight, shoud I shorten the distance of the hoses? Right now they are about 4-5'

Try doing it shorter it is kind of the same idea as a return pump for a wetdry after so many feet the pump will lose pressure resulting in lower gph.

4-5ft hoses shouldn't bother the flow that much, I have a couple XP3's and a XP4 and on my peacock tank which has one of each my hoses are about 4' and I have pretty decent ripples across the top of the tank. I did shorten my spray bar about 4" though which makes for more pressure out the bar by reducing the number of holes in it. Rich are you using the spraybar or the jet nossle? And what media do you have packed in it?

I noticed that when I removed the slack in the hoses on my fluval  306 the output increased slightly

as for media I am using sponge bio matric and filter floss

I shortened the hose by almost 12" and its still the same. I was looking at the FAQ section at rena's web site and one thing that jumped out, is if the o-ring is going bad it will cause air to get into the propeller area and that is not good because it looses pressure. So I am going to try the Vaseline around the gasket trick and see if it helps

Use some food grade o ring lube. It will also help prevent the o rings from shrinking.

I don't have a answer but have you noticed that if you put the trays in with the holes I don't know how to word this.  The trays can be placed with the holes. In line with the handles or not in line with the handles. Worked for me.  If this doesn't make sence. Pm me and ill try to explain better

Please dont take the conversation to PMs.  Others have Rena filters too and would like to hear.
