Anyone want to teach their grandma how to use the VCR?
« on: November 19, 2012, 11:26:29 PM »
Okay so Grandma doesn't need to know how to use the VCR.  It is worse.  Much worse.

*Hopefully* over the next year you will see some drastic changes in the MCA which should include an electronic newsletter.  A electronic newsletter which I volunteered for without having a clue on how to get it done.  I have a few weeks so I figured I would just figure it out.  I'm looking for some nice soul to feel pity for me and give me general assistance with HTML and using a WYSIWYG editor.  I downloaded SeaMonkey and played around but since I'm just starting if you have a better option that would be great.

A little help with graphics and such would be awesome too!

PM me if your interested in helping me get this off the ground.

I used to be a people person... but people ruined that for me.

If you have Microsoft Office (possibly even a free alternative, like OpenOffice.org) you could just design the newsletter in Word and then 'publish' to a PDF, either the built-in tool (Word 2010) or a third party tool like CutePDF (where you 'print' the document to the PDF creator and then set a filename for it).

That would be the easier route, IMO, vs. learning to code HTML.

Are you asking for help in creation/distribution, or someone with a little experience in layout to make the graphics and/or text look nice?  Or both?

PDFCreator is another "print to PDF" applicatoin that works well - it's what I mainly use at work.

Please, please, please do not use Word for any HTML generation. It's always hideous code that it generates IME.

I've used Dreamweaver in the past and think it was the best WYSIWYG editor for webpage design at the time. It's been a few years since I've looked at what else might be available now.

I agree Word creates terrible HTML...but I wasn't saying to create web pages from Word.  Just to use it as a simple tool for creating a document from which you can generate a PDF.

If you want to go the web page route, then yes, Dreamweaver is good. Has its quirks and possibly overkill for something like this (also costs $100+?), but works well.

It depends which way you want to go - if Dreamweaver, then you need some basic HTML coding knowledge.  If you just want an electronic newsletter in the form of a PDF, then little to no coding knowledge is needed.

Not looking to do a PDF, but if I have to go that route I can things taken care easy enough.

I would prefer to HTML but realistically need some sort of mentor to show me some basics and be available for the occasional question.

First look up a basic tutorial online for the basics. If you have question after that, feel free to ask away! HTML isn't hard IMO. If you can use BBCode, you can do HTML.
