Alcolapia alcalica Spawn!
« on: November 18, 2012, 06:00:49 PM »
I was doing water changes today and I accidentally put some cooler water into my soda cichlid tank.  Within an hour my male was going nuts.  There are 2 females holding and he is trying with the other two!

No idea what species you're talking about.  But,  at least you know what to do when you want fry. ;)

They're not very common.  They come from lake natron in Africa.  Temperatures in the lake can get up to 120 f with high salinity and a ph of around 9.  Thankfully they adapt well to more manageable conditions in the aquarium.  I will try to post some pictures soon.

I've been meaning to ask you - what temp do you keep yours at?   I remember reading an article that when they first found these, they couldnt keep them alive more than a few hours once taken out of their habitat.  Good job getting them to breed! 8)

I have mine at 87 F.  They are tank bred and the breeder I got them from kept them in comparable conditions.

Thanks!

Well done!  Not an inexpensive fish, either.

If they can handle 120 id keep my tank at that just to say that's what I keep my tank at if someone asks evaporation might be an issue
