Rapps/Tangled Up in Cichlids
« on: August 07, 2012, 09:39:40 PM »
Does anyone know of and LFS in the area that order through Rapps? I saw some odd Krobia Xingu (Orange Spot Acara) on his site that I'd love to pick up, but obviously doing 1 or 2 fish through the web/mail order isn't cost efficient (and obviously, he may have minimum order criteria). The only other place I've found them is Aquabid- and the same thing applies. The ones there you have to buy in lots of more than I'd have space for and with shipping it's just not economical.... I thought maybe if a shop is placing orders through there, it might work to have them piggy back a couple in for me.

Another thing that could work would be posting a group buy.
The last time I talked to Rapps about shipping me some species,  it was about $60 a box. If you get six people together& split shipping evenly, shipping isn't so bad.

I'd be in , if you get 4 more.

I'd be up for a group buy from Rapps potentially.  Currently I'm waiting to hear back from him on a couple of species, particularly Herotilapia multispinosa, that he has on his stock list.  So far I haven't been able to source any locally.  I'll know later today or tomorrow if I can get them via one of the LFS near me.  If not, and if the pics I requested from him come through and look fine, I should be up for an order.

The only fish I desire from Rapps is adult Crenicichla multispinosa, which at $225 each is far above my pay grade.  Poop.

Maybe I'll hit the lottery, or will also accept donations!

If the group order doesn't pan out (and maybe even if it does), I'd definitely be interested in some of the Orange Xingu if you get a spawn.

After looking at Rapps ' list...  I'd rather go with cichlidsoftheamericas.com
Would that work for every body else?

Doesn't look like cichlidsoftheamericas has rainbow cichlids/archocentrus multispinosa, which is what I was interested in.  I'm willing to wait and see if I can get them semi-locally or via AquaBid or a club auction, e.g. the Motor City one.

Looks like they do have grijalva salvinis, which are tempting, but probably would kill the rest of the fish in my tank given time.

Isn't $9.50 for a 1" or less nanoluteus expensive, or not really?

I wouldn't mind getting some Rainbows,  maybe I'll just go with them too.

FYI, Cichlid World in Garden City said they'd likely get more rainbow cichlids in a month or so...according to the guy I talked to there, the area the rainbow cichlids are collected from is flooded right now and until that subsides they can't/won't get more stock.  Last year this time he said they had rainbows for around $5 ea, but obviously that could change.

Otherwise, no fish shops within 30-40 miles of me has any plans to get them in except sporadically or by accident.  Chris...at least I think it was Chris, not Dale...at Fantastic Fins said he'd try to get some in but it could be a while.

So if you know of anyone besides Jeff Rapps, that's fine...I'm not thrilled about paying that much, but willing to go that route given he has a pretty good reputation and I would like to get some before my Honduran Red Points are full grown, for compatibility reasons.
