Fish problems

Woke up today and found have of my fish all dead with their mouths wide open. There has never been signs of disease, I just did a big water change a few days ago. Their diet has been fine with normal feedings. My thoughts are that it was very hot and my fish tank is upstairs in my bedroom. I had the fish tank heater on but when I got home from work my room was probably close to 100 degrees. The water was hot but I didn't think it was too hot. Then when I noticed my fish dead I quickly got up opened up the canopy which fell back on top of me which knocked my automatic fish feed which was full of food into the water. I started siphoning out as much of it as I could but could only get so much. SO THAT'S HOW MY DAY IS GOING! Do you think my fish died from the heat? There
is also no aggression marks. Have you guys had any problems with heat before? I also have a goldfish tank and they were all fine their water feels about 75 degrees.

Yes, it was most likely the heat that killed them.  As the temperature rises, the amount of oxygen in the water will decline and the metabolism of the fish will rise requiring more oxygen.  Make sure to get a reliable thermometer as well.  Don't assume that the markings on your heater are correct.  Sorry about your fish.

I pulled thermometer out and did a 25% water change with ice cold water to bring the temperature, but now I have to make sure the rest don't die from eating to much. Thinking about trying different fish, there cost me way to much money.

One way to can help with heat. Try not to do water changes with cold water its a good way to shock the fish. Depending on the size of the tank freeze a 2 liter bottle or 20 oz bottle and put it in the tank it will lower the water temp slowing without shock the fish.If you have a hood remove it shut the lights off. You can also set up a fan to blow at the top of the water to promote gas exchange or point a power head if you have one in the tank towards the surface. Sorry for the loss i hope some of this helps.

doubt it was heat that killed them, rather the lack of oxygen in the warm water....
