Diagnostic Help
« on: May 10, 2017, 08:39:32 AM »
I have a red fin borleyi that is currently in a quarantine tank.
He has what appear to be white spots that appear small and then grow and as they grow a cotton white fuzz appears and after a couple days the fuzz will fall off and leave an open wound.
I've been treating with aquarium salt, melafix, i tried a parasite tab in case it was a parasite.
I've done 2 salt baths to see if that would help

I know this is not ICH.. i have dealt with ich in the past and it's nothing like it.

well nothing seems to be helping and i'm at a loss to help this guy out.
He eats well and is showing no signs of weakness.

Any help on what this could be and or help to treating would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

White fuzz usually indicates a fungal infection so the salt & melafix is what I have had good luck with in the past, but you already have done that so it's weird that it's still there. It may sounds like an over simplification but sometimes just plain clean fresh water with daily water changes in the QT tank can help more than anything. I would try doing 50% WC's daily for him in the QT tank for the next week and see if that helps him at all.

Thanks Steve,
I'll try that out and lay off the meds and see how that goes.

Salt baths related :- what ratio of salt to water have you tried? I did 2 baths of 1/2cup salt to 1gallon of water for 5 mins..

I never measure out exact on salt but you sound pretty close to what I have done. When I did salt baths on my Venustus I use to have when he had problems I use to just put a hand full of salt in about 1g and let him sit in that for about 10 mins a couple times a day.
