Feeding Neolamp. Trets
« on: October 15, 2015, 02:37:07 AM »
Can wild or F1 Tretacephalus be fed spirulina alone? The tank I would put them in has some fish that can eat nothing else besides Spirulina. I know online it says to vary the diet of Trets.

I'm currently trying out that very thing. It's only been a week but my three Trets are doing quite well in my Tropheus tank being fed Dainichi Veggie FX and Deluxe, so far so good.

Dainichi foods do have an appropriate amount of fish, krill & plankton protein to satisfy a carnivorous species such as trets...I feed my troph's veggie fx & omega one kelp pellets (also containing halibut & krill protein) and also have 3 malawi blue dolphins in the tank (also carnivores + my wife's fav fish)...the dolphins are doing great for sure, but I am not sure pure spirulina flakes will be sufficient for your trets...time will tell I suppose...hopefully their need for protein won't turn them into tail ripping, flesh stripping maniacs in your vegan tank...

I am not going to try with Trets right now. I have some Chewerwe Elongatus. I bought 5 at the Winter auction. I overfed on them basic staple and was left with two. A pair it turns out 😀. But now I stick to Spirulina with no issues of bloat.

They would be okay with Spirulina diet but might lack in growth and color. Herbivores have a longer digestive tract and therefore can absorb more nutrients because of it. But a fish with a shorter DT will not have the food in their DT long enough to get the most from it. Omega one makes great foods. Check into their Super Color Veggie Pellets if you decide on Trets.
