I AM SO EXCITED YOU GUYS
« on: July 15, 2015, 12:46:17 PM »
I just walked past my tank to get some more coffee and noticed two cyps dancing around each other (the alpha male and who I THOUGHT was a male starting to color), and I checked them out for a minute and BOOM egg drops!! I am so excited!! I thought once before that they spawned but it turned out that one of them just had a mouth full of food or something, but this time I saw the evidence, egg after egg!!

woohoo!

Great news & even better...  you got to witness it.   Pretty cool how they spawn mid water, huh?

Thanks guys! I am going to take Mr Cunningham's advice and separate her from the community tank, but i have a couple questions. Should i separate her now or wait a few weeks? Is she supposed to eat or will she swallow or spit eggs?

They typically won't attempt to eat while holding.  I would put her somewhere that doesn't have a lot of foot traffic.  If I recall correctly, they can get spooked and spit the eggs out.

What might be best is just to put her in a breeder net in the same tank.  This would help minimize the initial stress of a bigger move.

Good ideas, thanks! I covered the half o f the tank that faces the corridor with a sheet to keep from startling her. Im leaving on a ten week trip in a couple of weeks so i will put her in a breeder net before i go and give my husband instructions from there.

As an aside, i feel like this "experience" boosted the alpha male's confidence like crazy, he's flashing at anything that moves. My female lamp brevis spinsters are starting to get annoyed!

Congratulations!  It seems like it took forever for my Cyps to start breeding and they finally bred in April, very exciting too.  Since then they're on their 3 round with 1 dominant male and 3 females.  I luckily also saw their mating ritual and was able to get video ... woohoo! ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tp2dxS3hlYw.  Maybe it will come in handy if you want to show folks the process.  FYI, they're Cyprichromis Coloratus Jumbo Yellow F1, which would make the new fry F2's right? (30+ fry now)

Good luck with your Cyps!  All the best and have a great time in the Arctic!
