I know this is an old post but the recent posts sparked new interest.  That is an awesome looking male.  I looked at some pics of others and they are more solid orange or yellow.  I like the looks of your male the most.  Kinda makes me want some.  I may have to go on the hunt!

Seems to me it depends it depends on the age and mood of the male the older they get the more solid the pattern they are cool fish no mater what even the female pattern is nice.

Do you remember roughly how big he was in that pic. My male is around 3" and has really nice color but is almost a yellow green right now
55 gallon PS. williamsi north, elongatus chewere and syndontis petricola

40 breeder synodontis petricola with an asian twist. A pair of chinese vermillion gobies and a trio of betta splendens.

40 breeder soon to be salty fish with live rock, possibly adding some lps and soft corals after

I believe he was between 3 and 4 inches.....probably closer to 3.
