Is it an actual insignis or a spilonatus?

Actually Insiginis is a species you don't see too often and i know for a fact there is someone in the state that breeds them his name is bill or something like that... When pet paradise was around they would get them from time to time along with aulonocara soloci.

It's properly Protomelas spilonotus. IIRC, you got it from the MCA auction? I know one person, if not more, put a bunch of "P. insignis" in it. I bought some of the fry as well. The problem with rejecting it for an incorrect name is that it's become a trade name. It'd be similar to rejecting people entering S. fryeri in the auction while calling them "Ahli" in some fashion.

@Dan, in a different thread, I'd be curious to see some pictures of true P. insignus being raised here in MI. My impression is that it became a trade name for P. spilonotus after insignus became popular many years ago, then became hard to find from the lake while they were popular, so spilonotus was substituted.

Yeah man i should of bought them before they went under and kept in touch with the guy. Ill do some poking around to see if i can find out if he has or is still breeding them. I think they called him wild bill or something always had tons of cool fish. I know they were not selling cheap they were doing trios at like 3 inch for 120
