Blind fish !
« on: January 26, 2013, 11:15:36 AM »
I just recently setup a Peacock tank, 55 tank running on a magnum 350.  I bought a gorgeous Sunburst Peacock as a group of 5 fish (first fish in the tank). The next morning I noticed that he had become the dominant fish in the tank, chasing everyone away from his favorite spot.  A couple of days later I introduced 10 new fish into the tank, a couple of the new fish were slightly larger than the Sunburst.  48 hours later I notice that his left eye bulging out, not pop-eye but still bulging out none the same.  Took a picture of him and showed it to the LFS that I had purchased him at and they said it was an injury, probably caused by him bumping up against a rock or something. I treated the tank with Melafix for the next 5 days and the bulging went away. However now his eye is completely flat, there is no concavity (if such a word) like a normal eye.  Now he swims tilted on the side up above the other fish, he eats and swims normally but I believe he is now BLIND in that eye.

Has anyone experienced anything like this ?

I saw a red peacock in a store... her was the last one in the tank and had a bad eye like you describe.

I offered a couple bucks or something.  Or half off... whatever it was.

Now I have a one eye red peacock.  He eats great, is getting some color and is a boss in his area of the tank.  No other side effects.

Now just recently... to cut to the chase.  Bought a fish... didnt notice the damaged eye till home.  Now eye is shot.  Living perfectly fine life.  All is good.

Yours will more than likely straighten up his swim and be totally fine.

That's good to know.  It is my oldest daughters favorite fish (FRANK)...She called me at work the day the eye was injured, she was freaking out, wanted to leave work and come straight home ASAP.  Nice to see that she might have caught the fish bug too !

He seems to be doing better each day,  he is now mingling in with the other fish.  I do see him go spastic now and then, almost like he is afraid of his own shadow.

Thanks for the follow up !

Sounds like the lens came out due to the injury.  The affected eye looks flat.  Depending on the severity, the fish might still see light and motion to some degree.
