You're on the right track. Read up on what you're planning to buy, don't be afraid to ask questions, and it will help you to know how to take care of them. I've been doing this for over 10 years now, and I'm still learning new things all of the time.
The best advice I can give is to realize you're dealing with living things and unfortunately, things can and will go wrong. Sometimes you'll have a tank crash or power outage, or heater go haywire, or any one of a thousand things that can happen. It sucks when it happens, but trust me, it's worth it to dust yourself off and get right back into things, because there's nothing more satisfying than finding out fish you're keeping are breeding for you because you're keeping them happy.
