Question about gold head comps
« on: December 18, 2014, 10:59:27 PM »
So I notice when I "google image" gold face comps (and red fin calvuses too), there are some photos where the fish are predominantly more pale with stripes, the way I'm used to seeing them in real life, but a few pictures of really dark-bodied fish. I was wondering if this was a difference in wild caught versus bred, or just a phenotypic trait selected for while breeding, or maybe just a "blushing" fish? I'll put pictures below to help show what I mean.

Dark body:

Colors I am used to seeing every LFS I go to:

Thanks!

I believe they are different. One is a gold. One is known as the gold head. I have the one with a gold head that I just got from Turtleman. He's really cool. Idk if I was any help. Lol.

I wonder if gold comps are commonly mislabeled as gold heads? I have a fry right now that I bought as a "gold head comp," but it looks like it will have a gold head and a pale "goldish" striped body. The darker ones look so cool, I want one!!

Yes I do from time to time.  I also can check with a breeder in OH that breeds almost every type of wc comp and calvus.  Sometimes I am able to get 2.5" ones or bigger.
