Had that problem in the past. Finally put some heating cables up a few years back and that took care of the ice dam/leak in the front room. Just have to be careful to not run them all the time, it's not good for the shingles.
Better to have a short life full of what you like doing, than a long life spent in a miserable way.

 Better Attic Insulation and venting will take care of that too. Which is next on our list for the spring.

Were not sure how we got ours we have over 6 inches of insulation and attic fans and when i go up there its always colder then a Eskimos butt.

Over the rafters. There is a ton up there to be honest. They even put the 2" pink foam over the blown in that they put on the rolled out stuff.
