I Vented A Rostratus , ?
« on: December 28, 2013, 07:52:00 PM »
Here are some pic;s of a Rostratus . I thought for sure this was a female and listed it on this sight as such . Long story short I Vented the fish using all the tools available to me that I had learned threw research Example : Flash light , Magnified glass exc.... It is to my belief this is a male and not a female Note I am not use to doing this . In my observation I see two holes exactly the same size and shape , One slightly more pinkish than the other  Here are a few pic;s and a measurement of the fish just by looking at the fish comparing it to other Female it looks the part however I had read that a male may not show color in a mix male tank and that is what I have . What dose it look like to all the Rostratus keepers out there >

Looks like a rostratus to me... was the venting everything you hoped it would be? Lol. Were there candles and Barry white involved?
I have about 18,000 rounds of .223 I'm  looking to get rid of, 100 rd bags. 1-4 bags $40 ea, 5-9 bags $38 ea, 10 or more bags $35 ea. I can't put this in the for sale section, its not fish related. No shipping.

fin shape looks male, a pic of the vent may have helped, but if the holes are the same size that would be a male as well.  Rostratus are very very slow to color up, and when they do finally color up it happens very quickly, and like a lot of haps, it will depend on the presence of a female.

IMO, venting is a good method for species of fish in which both the males and females look the same when mature.

For haps, IME if they are large enough to vent with 100% accuracy, they are large enough to visually study and reach a sex conclusion.

Looking at the first photo, the fish you have is a male F. rostratus. The flecks of color in the dorsal fin give it away. If you look hard enough at the caudal fin, you can also see specks/dotting of color coming in as well.
