My heater is actually in front of the background, next to the filter in the back right corner. It blends in pretty well. I was afraid to put it behind the background.

I used 3/4" insulation board and didn't add any more depth

Wow that looks awesome.  The rock set up is so realistic,  could hardly tell you had a DYI BG in the tank... Kudos...

My heater isnt behind the background, I was too afraid to try it. It is in the corner, not in the picture above.
