The fry you can't keep in the net...they'll get sucked right through.
Depending on the tank, I've found that sprinkling a sand substrate in the net can keep the adults outside from sucking them through. It'll also help keep the net taught against the edges of the frame so fry don't wedge themselves between the net and the frame.

Thats a good idea!

They can still suck them through if they get close to the sides. It's not the best option for fry raising IMO, but you do what you have to do and work with what you have.

Has anyone used a in tank breeding net for a female who's holding?  Although I have an extra tank, I was planning on using for fry and as a hospital tank, it ended up being used for fish I bought at the auction.  Not planning on setting up my large show tank for another 3-6 months.
Just wondering.  Thanks

I use this for my females

Yes these work great& 3 of them for less than $35shipped, from One Way Pet, is hard to beat.  I know if you buy one from a LFS it can cost up to $20each.

Thanks for the link, I ordered a couple and they should be here by the end of the week.

I use the below mesh nets inside my tanks all the time.  I have over twenty of them and at least give to six females in different tanks in them at any given time.  They seem to work gone for me.

So once the mother spits the fish, how long do you keep them in the net?

I use these in my tanks for the female after I strip the fry around 15 to 20 days.

Thanks for this suggestion Josh - just picked one up today and will see how it works.  It was a bit more than the kensfish $4 price, but then I didn't have to pay shipping either.

I like the idea of these a lot over the breeder nets.

But, my basement is very cold.  I am afraid that the temperature would drop too much.  I have about a week to decide... the only fish we really are trying to get breed.... now are.   ;D

Only negative I've seen of the solid plastic box over the nets is the issue of trying to get a lid to fit with the box.  If you don't run lids, no problem, but my basement gets too humid if I don't use lids.

I really like this concept, and will order some this weekend.  Saves me having to set up a bunch of tanks before I'm ready to add another rack.

Well, I have finally put my hang on breeding box to use.  It took me a while to figure out how to net the female's without causing too much stress.  Ended up using a clear piece of plastic, like a tank divider to herd the female into a area where I could net her without chasing her around too long.

Was able to get my haplochromis sp 44 and a labidochromis sp hongi this week.

Here is a pix of the sp 44 with the fry she spit today.   ;D
