White or yellow fish to go into a mostly Mbuna tank?
« on: March 27, 2013, 08:10:29 AM »
So, I am looking for something that is yellow or maybe white... preferably yellow.

I have an Electric Yellow in there now and want to add some more yellow.  May just get some more Electric Yellows if I cant find something else.

Couple questions:
~Is the Yellow you have in there a male or female?
~If you go with White Labidochromis and the sex is opposite of the Yellow, they WILL cross breed.
~IMHO, if you're going for a nice show tank I would stick with the yellows if they are high quality. But if you eventually want to breed them, the whites are not as plentiful in the hobby (though they are making gains, especially around here).

I dont know sex of the Yellow.   :o

I had a white and all of a sudden it was stuck to the filter last morning.   :'(  I really liked it too.

This is definitely just a show tank... something for me to oogle over and nothing more.  Anything that happens to breed in there (like the Rusty, which was supposed to be a male) will just become fish food.  I will make no attempt at keeping the fry.

Right now, I think I will just be looking for some more Yellow if something else doesnt come up that catches my eye.

I applaud your efforts at not keeping any fry that would be possible hybrids. However, keep in mind that in a show tank with heavy cover there is always the chance of some fry surviving. If that ever happens, I have always found someone that has predatory fish to "take care of"  those accidental hybrids.

For yellow I'd get a small group of L. caeruleus, not just a single (RIP).

For white, find a nice albino-something that wouldn't be likely to cross with what you already have in there (albino zebra sp. perhaps?)

x2. Or if the fish is really small, a quick introduction to a hard surface is a fast, humane method that works as well.

Yup, no mutant babies in our house!   8)

We have had two batches of fish food come from the Rusty so far and another one is ready to pop.  I think I can see the Livingstoni salivating now.

Have an Albino Zebra in there.  He and the Hongi Red Top are the kings of the tank.  Its fun to watch them compete for the Rusty.  I am afraid I may have to get rid of the Rusty at some time if it gets too violent.  But, for now it is just a show of color that completely amazes me.

I have a Pseudotropheus sp. ''Polit'' Lion's Cove, but it is barely an inch... so it will be a while before it goes into the tank.

Where did you get your Polit from? If you don't mind me asking. I have a male and 2 females, one is holding right now, but I would love to get a few more for sure. Just wondering.
No longer fishroom, I have a FISH BASEMENT!!!

Hey Ken where are you located? I may have a spare Flavus Male for your Mbuna show tank if you are interested.

Hmmm, yellow and white...where have I seen that before?  ??? Oh, I know, in my living room. I have a Saulosi and White Lab tank. Very active tank and good breeders. If you don't want to breed just let nature take it's course. Just saying...
