Antibiotic Regulation
« on: January 05, 2012, 12:56:00 PM »
I saw this today:
http://www.fiercepharma.com/story/fda-restricts-some-antibiotics-livestock/2012-01-05

And found this most interesting:
Quote
By agency (FDA) estimates, 80% of antibiotics in the U.S. are given to animals, not humans, and most of them are administered in bulk via feed or water.
Makes me more motivated about raising as much of my own food as possible.

But I'm also surprised that we don't seem to see more of this in the aquarium trade. Sure there's some medications, but overall it doesn't seem like it's a very often occurrence. Or is it simply that larger distributors do it (bulk antibiotics) and now one hears about it?

The problem with rambit use of antibiotics is that the 'bugs' become resistant to the antibiotics so when we humans need them they no longer work.  Its not necessarily a big issue for the meat we consume.  Its just do we as a society want any of our existing drugs to continue to work?

For a very short period of time I sold a product called Fish Mox which is simply Amoxicillin.  There is NO WAY that the quantity I was able to sell these in where being used for aquarium fish.  There aren't enough aquariums in the world to cover how much of this was being sold.  Simply put Fish Mox was a very inexpensive way to get an antibiotic without a prescription.

I used to be a people person... but people ruined that for me.
