Title: Eartheaters anyone?
Post by: JG on November 10, 2017, 11:50:57 PM
Just wondering if anyone on the forum or in the club keeps species from the Eartheaters, ie., Gymnos, Geos, Guianacara? I've always liked these unusual cichlids and often have one or more species of them in my tanks.

My very 1st spawning pair of cichlids in 1983 were geophagus brasiliensis. As you all know a very common geo that sadly have declined to almost a feeder fish level on the interest list. I raised my pair from 1" to 12" for the male and 10" female. They regularly filled my tank with clouds of fry and were so beautifully spangled. A site to behold! Have thought many times of getting back into geo's but being a 1 tank guy now haven't come back full circle as yet. Love a nice South American biotype tank. Very soothing to view.

I have a nice group of Guianacara dacrya doing well. A few larger WC males and some smaller juveniles that are growing out nicely. Great species to keep. I also have a another group of F! Gymnogeophagus australis that I'm keeping again. These guys are the offspring of the WC group brought back from a Canadian hobbyist who accompanied Felipe on one of his last trips I believe. I kept and bred these over a decade ago but they're another nice species. The other species I keep are a juvenile smaller group of Guianacara stergiosi. I have to relocate them into a larger tank to grow them out properly. The eartheaters group of fishes are a an under appreciated species but have lots of beauty and personality in my opinion.

I just recently got a trio from Josh of topajo geo's. First I have owned. I've found them to be a really interesting fish, fun watching them constantly sifting the sand all the time.

The Tapajos are very nice. If you have room, try and expand the group size a bit. They're absolutely stunning when in breeding dress.

Yeah I've got a good amount of room in there. It's a 120g 4x2x2 and stock is two Delhezi bichirs 10" & 11", one polleni 8" and then the three geos.

I picked up a beautiful little pair of gymnogeophagus sp. blue neon yesterday for my sons tank. Cool semi-dwarf geo with a stunning color pattern. No gymnogeo's in Australia at all that I was aware of in 30+ yrs of cichlid keeping so a fun purchase for me. Happy dayz
