Title: Three great days on the Au Sable
Post by: Steve on June 03, 2017, 04:03:29 PM
Just returned home from 3 full days on the Au Sable. Couldn't have had a better trip. My fishing buddy & I were using the new spey rods I just built for us and not only did they work wonders in spots too tight for normal single handed fly rods, but the trout Gods were kind to us and most the trout on the spey rods were all very nice fat healthy 16" to 18" Rainbows and browns. Really enjoyed using the spey rods, won't be giving up my single handers anytime soon, but will for sure be grabbing the spey on a regular bases on trips. A great time with a good friend catching great trout on what to me is the most beautiful river anywhere. Now it's time to finish a couple rods orders and tie some streamers to restock the flies I lost on this trip and then get ready to head back up for another 3 days in about a week.

Bloody awesome mate!! Can you lost a pic or explain the difference between and single handed and spey fly rod? I have been a keen fisho for 40 years and have only "waved the wand" and handful of times for salt watwr fish and sea trout in Ireland. No clue about the terminology but love to learn new fishy things...cheers mate 👍

With double handed spey rods your are using various anchor points to load the line then sweep the line across and forward. That loads the rod and eliminates the need for a backcast so you are able to fish it more effectively in spots where a single handed rod which requires a backcast can not be used. Probably be easier just to link a video showing it because it's hard to explain without showing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K30K5sNnIro&t=145s

Beautiful fish!!  I had never heard of a spey rod.  Pretty convenient in tight spots!

That's a good explanation Steve. So is a spey rod a heavier weight rod than your single handed choice for trout fishing? You wouldnt get the load pressure on a 5 or 6wt rod to make the cast in 1 motion would you?

Not much heavier than a single hander. The weight in hand is a tad heavier simply because it is 3ft longer than a single handed rod, but this spey is actually a 5/6wt.
