Title: Turtleman's Kapampa Frontosa
Post by: Super Turtleman on September 05, 2011, 06:39:11 AM
Just thought I'd get my thread going again. I will dig up some of the old pics to help provide a "visual timeline".

Here are the current stats:

Tank size: 125G
Lighting: 72" Coralife Lunar AquaLight Deluxe Series w/ Moonlight LEDs
Filtration: FX5, AC 110 x2, Emperor 400 x1

Eventually I will be upgrading to a bigger tank, but for now they're doing good. Here's a vid I took yesterday morning with my phone.

I'd say about a year and a half? I believe I got them at the 2010 Winter auction at less then an inch in size.

Ok, here's a little timeline of my fronts...most of you have already seen this. My youtube channel has a bunch of videos with dates for size comparisons.

March 2010 - Brought them home and settled them in their 50G temporary home. 4 Yellow Kasanga Compressiceps are their cohabitants.

February 2011 - I lost 1 fish. He jumped out of a small uncovered hole between some filters. Bummer!!!    :(

March 2011 - More fish pics, still doing well.

I think the biggest is about 3.5" to 4" or so Ron. I took some pics this morning, I'll get them posted soon. I think I have a good amount of males and females, so I should be able to get a decent colony going and sell an extra or three...

I'm not sure what Mr. Super Turtleman used for a background but to get similar results I use Rustoleum Royal Blue and paint it on with a roller.  Usually takes a 2 coats.

I see I see. Where did you get your rustoleum paint from. Local hardware, Home Depot maybe. Just wondering, thanks for the info...

Good to know, cause i have a 55gal, im thinkin bout settin up as sort of a small display tank. And i think it would be a perfect tank to try i on and see if i like it or not..
Title: Re: Turtleman's Kapampa Frontosa

Actually, the background is a normal paper background you tape on. It's darker blue at the bottom and then fades to lighter blue as you rise. The flash throws the effect way off. Though I would prefer to paint it on if I could and not have to deal with water drips and bubbles.

Fish are still doing well. I lost my female Compressiceps so I will be rehoming the 2 lone males soon. Everything is going well tankwise.

Fighting and aggression is going up...getting close to the time to thin out the herd.I've identified 2 males I will keep, now have to identify all the females.

Great pictures! Those fish are really growing up nicely. IMO it also gives you more appreciation for them having raised them yourself rather than just buying a group of adults.
Fighting and aggression is going up...getting close to the time to thin out the herd.I've identified 2 males I will keep, now have to identify all the females.
IME with various larger haps, if you keep 2 males you'll get one that looks awesome and one that is either just dull and subordinate, or that gets beat up badly. If you keep 3, you'll typically have a dominant that looks great and a sub-dominant that looks nice, both splitting a tank close to 50/50 depending on aquascaping, and a third that'll be bounced back and forth and not look so nice, but he won't be targeted as much as in the 2 male situation.

Now, I'm newer to fronts than you - have a group of the 7 stripes growing out - so it might be different, but I thought I'd throw out my experience with haps as food for thought.

I was originally getting rid of the most dominant male to whittle down my group, but I've kind of stopped for the time being because I don't want to get rid of too many.

Maybe a little more research is in order. I actually just finished reading that in a friends mbuna set up post. Either 1 male or 3...works for me. I'd rather keep more.   ;D

Let me know if you find anything interesting while researching.  ;)

Another problem IMO with keeping only 1 male - if something happens to him, now you have none (unless you've got a backup in another tank). I've been burned by that twice within the last few years. First with L. caeruleus and then with a beautiful albino TR male I'd spent a few years raising.

Yeah, I was intending to keep 3 males. It'd be nice if that's what I end up having, but I doubt I'm that lucky.  :P

Well, successfully accomplished a move with these guys. I kept them in a rubber tote for about 5 days while I moved the tank and got it set up. One was beat up pretty good but the others were looking great (considering cramped quarters, less feedings, etc). The beat up one is already recovering nicely. I'll have to update with some pics of them newly situated. My wife wanted me to switch stands of my tanks, so they're now in my 140G stand and canopy combo...with their old tank of course. Talk about adding a little extra work to the move. I was fortunate to have some friends help with the logistics of moving two huge tanks at once.

Cramped Quarters

You know they were prolific in my tank from all the fry I kinda dumped on you.  ;)  Is it possible that the fronts are snacking on fry?

I ended up with a couple escapees. One of them shares rock cave quarters with my black calvus.???  I'm surprised he didn't get eaten when he was tiny.

Anything is possible. Those fronts wolf down a lot at once. Actually, if they're eating them that's what I want. Some extra snacking between meals.   ;D

Did a major water change and redecorated last night. I think it looks a lot better. I also found a couple of my Julies in the FX5. About 6 weeks ago, the Fronts knocked the strainer off the intake tube. Must've got sucked in then and I didn't notice. They're a little thin but otherwise ok.

Bought a new home for the "Gibbs".

Got an 8' Acrylic tank w/ black back panel (8x2x2), Acrylic Stand, 75G Acrylic sump, pumps, UV Sterilizer, PH Testing gizmo, electronic float that can be used to activate WCs, 2 4' lights, half a garbage bag of bio balls and some other miscellaneous items. I just need to buy new hoses to hook everything up (once I figure it all out...seems somewhat simple). $925. Not too bad.

Tank is on it's back because of the bulk heads...

Not sure exactly when I'll set it up. Gotta figure everything out, take down the current tank, blah blah blah, etc, etc. Looking forward to it though.

The new 8' tank is set up, fish are in and things are looking good. A few tweaks left but very happy so far.
