Title: Kens Fish Spirulina
Post by: Hobbiest on September 23, 2016, 06:58:22 PM
Well I don't  know if I should have reasonable expectation that when I buy bulk flake food that a good portion of it should be nice large flakes. It seems like I should be able to count on that. Wet Thum used to selll large flakes. Bob Stevens and Marty also sold larger flakes. I guess that it does not say anywhere that you are guaranteed to get larger flakes when you buy bulk. I recently bought a pound of Garlic Spirulina from Kens fish. Normally there is enough large flake in the bag to make it acceptable what is left as crumbles. This time however both half pound bags had just enough large flakes for maybe 7 days of feeding two tanks. Well I called Kens Fish and left a voicemail. I sent them a email on the matter with their online form. I also offered feedback in their private email requesting feedback. I have not heard anything from them. It has been hard to find the garlic flake. I found a place that has it in California and I guess that they will get my business next.

My Pseudo Zebras are pretty large. 5-6". In my opinion they do not get enough food with the crumbles. Anyway, I suppose there are no guarantees on flake size. If they replace my order I will update that it was replaced. I run two tanks so the crumbles are mostly useless to me. Whereas in a hatchery set up they could easily be used.

My last order has crumbled easily for some reason.  It doesn't happen often, but it's obviously frustrating when it does.  I actually bought some gelatin and I'm going to try mixing it with that to see what kind of results I get.

Unfortunately, I've heard Ken's customer service has gone downhill in the last couple of years.

Thank u. I will keep at it with Kens support. I also have used YFS but they do not have the garlic Spirulina. Kens also is the only place I have found that had Metronidazole Spirulina which could come in very handy.

Ordering from Ken 14 years ago or so was easy, nice and personable. He answered the phone himself and really took care of the customer when you put large orders in. Now, things are often missing and don't get replaced, etc. Shipping is very unreliable, etc. Just ask us and a bunch of others who ordered around OCA time last year. It's unfortunate.

I order from YFS as well.

Question... why are you feeding flakes to such large fish?

In my house, anything 1.5"+ gets pellets.

Probably a good question. Maybe a simple answer would be cost. Spectrum is too pricey. My Elongatus are very suceptible to bloat which makes sprulina the only choice for me. I do use sinking spirulina pellets. Most of my Zebras do not touch them. My Buttekoferi does though. But yes maybe it is time to look for a smaller sinking spirulina pellet. I have a wet/dry filter so the food has to sink. I did just order from YFS. My only complaint with them is that it seems to take three or four days after ordering for them to ship.

What kind of pellets are you both using?

2 weeks ago I made my 1st order from YFS. I ordered late Friday night. Got an order confirmation and shipping tracking number Sat and received 3#'s of food Monday. I was very impressed with Bill's service.
My tropheus are loving the YFS supreme green pellets and the soft spirulina pellets. The soft spirulina is 2.5mm but crumbles very easily.
Bill has my loyalty after round 1!

Depends on the fish. I use everything though...  Southern Delight, OSI, NLS, plecocaine,  Xtreme, northfin,  sera,  hikari,  etc.

BTW - I don't know which elongatus you have,  but I've fed Chewere, Likoma  & Chailosi Plecocaine without any issues.

I'm using:
Green Supreme
Red Supreme
Soft Spirulina

I have some of their flake food that I'll use for smaller fishes but I've yet to try it yet as I'm completing another brand that I currently have in stock. I also will continue to use Northfin pellets as its a high quality product. Dainichi pellets are also very good. It's all about balance of ingredients, cost and results. Usually the old adage "you get what you pay for" holds true but not always. ;)

They have never sent me a tracking number and I have ordered from them at least 5 times. LOL! Their product is good though I must say. Nice big flakes!

On the other point; I bought Spirulina pellets several months ago for feeding the Buttekoferi. They do eat them as do some of my other fish. My Zebras though do not touch the pellets.
