Title: Hints, Tips, Tricks for Traveling to ACA Convention?
Post by: Ron on June 29, 2016, 08:53:54 PM
Looking for some insight on what to bring and what to expect.

Bring buckets and an air pump to keep any fish purchased alive? Do sellers commonly hold stock that is purchased until Sunday?

Expect things to be going around the clock or are there peak hours and  then hours to spend out exploring the area?

Trying to get prepared having never been. Any insight is appreciated.  ;D

I setup 16 gallon tubs in my room with airline, airpump, and heaters for fish for sale and purchased.  Some people will hold fish but most won't want too.  Also same things Blair said.  I have a whole convention check off list when I pack for one.

Yes, but one must pace themself, when dealing with 12-16hrs/a day of drinking

Sterilite tubs are a good way to go for purchased fish (or if you want to sell fish).  They stack together easily so they don't take up too much space in the car, and you can put the lids on them to keep fish from jumping out.  a bucket for adding/taking water out of the tubs is a good idea as well.

If you're thinking about bringing fish to sell, try posting a list on the ACA group on facebook and wherever else it will be seen.  You may be able to pre sell some fish.

Bringing your own booze and snacks is a good way to save some money, as hotel food is usually expensive.  I usually go to a grocery store to buy pop/drinks as well.

As other people said, bring bagging supplies along with dechlorinator.  It's also a good idea to cut up some of the ammonia remover filter pad to put in your tubs/buckets and bags.

If you're interested in fish and don't buy them right away, write down the room number!  You'll be surprised at how many people are selling fish and it's easy to get turned around.  If you see something you can't live without, buy it right away.  If you want to take a chance, you can wait until Saturday evening, and a lot of people will lower their prices on what they have left to try to move it before the auction.

Peak hours for checking out fish are usually when there isn't a speaker.  Other than that, I've seen rooms open well past midnight.

If you like to swim, don't forget your swimsuit as they have a pool.

I'm gonna let you in on one of my secrets, since it's your first convention...  Marty ALWAYS has an extra Sterilite tub, so don't worry about bringing one. ;)

Bleh... just use the hotel trash can/ice bucket, like I do.

We have 10 gallon rental tanks available.  They will be set up with conditioned water and sponge filter.  Much less fuss than dealing tubs or buckets in your room.

Never been through the cemetery in Spring Grove, but I'm sure it's nice.
The Aquarium is 5 minutes away from the hotel, and there's a trip going at 9am Thursday if you want to join it.

If you miss it, there's always Uber, and being 5 minutes away, it's a cheap ride.

Spent all of my cash and more! Burnt out by the end of the convention but don't regret it. Lots of laughs. Next year I'll be a bit wiser and book a day or two off after the event to just chill. I think I came home with a little of everything: fish, tanks, pleco and cichlid caves, food, equipment. Good times!

Same here - what a great time! Brought back 2.5 boxes worth of fish, including a few new haps and plecos I haven't kept + 2 CARES species, plus a bunch of new fish foods, some pleco caves, and various other equipment.
