Title: Canister Filter Suggetions Needed
Post by: Ava333 on April 20, 2016, 11:04:49 AM
Have a friend that needs help picking out a new filter for his new tank. Old one doesn't have a high enough GPH for African Cichlids in a 125 Tall tank. He did have Oscars.

I have only used Fluval so I'm reaching out to the forum for help. He's going to stock the tank like it's a 90 gallon because it's a Tall tank, so roughly 30 cichlids. I'm posting pics of one he found.

What good brands are out there besides Fluval? And what should be stay away from? And if it comes with a UV sterilize, does that matter?

Depends on how much he is wanting to spend. The one you posted (Sun Sun) is a good one for the price. I know a couple people that have it and seem to like it. And the price can't be beat. With 30 fish though if it were me I would look into a used Fluval FX5. Now that the FX6 has been out for awhile you can find the FX5 for $125-$150 max and it is a really good filter than holds a ton of media and can handle 30 fish in a tank.

I agree with Steve, the FX-5 would be my choice. It's a great canister filter and at one time I had six of them running at my house.

It's too bad we're so far away because I have an EHEIM Professional II type 2038 that would be great for his tank.

Thank you both for posting! I'll pass it on. Is there a brand he needs to stay away from?
