Title: [ VOTING HAS BEGUN!!! Cast Yours! ] Defintely Needs a BANNER!!! Like Yesterday!

Hey Gang,

 Every other site has a Banner for the top of the site and I was wondering if this was going to happen anytime soon!?

 I have some software that I could use to make a couple banner up of suggestions if you whom are interested wanteed to pitch in and give some ideas.

 I'm sure that we could all come up with a Nice one that would be Asthetically Pleasing upon entrance of the Site. It would be at the Top of Every page...

 What are your Guys Thoughts on this?

 I decided to Bring the Choices of the Banner Vote to the First Post for Ease of Voting. (Thanks Grizzly'sdad fro suggestion this!)

I was trying to match this Banner up with the Logo From the parent Site [Link Below]... http://www.michigan.cichlid.freeservers.com/

On this site the Original Logo Looks like this:

 So I thought that it would be most Respectful to [Keep] the original Basic Design, with a modern touch, and keep some type of oval around the Fish. But this time with Deatiled Full Color Fish... So that's the reason that I feel the Oval and the Actual Fish in the Original Logo would Best Represent the Association! As it has always been... Call me Old Fashioned...  ;)

 Anyway, enough blubbering... LOL- HERE Are the Choices that I made taking into consideration Everyone's Ideas and Thoughts. Maybe we could take a Vote or Start another Thread with a pole to See Which Banner Gets the Most Votes. With Only "one" vote per person! [wink, Wink...]

 So I figured for fun I would take the top three Voted for Banners Plus one extra banner and apply it to the Forums Home Page to show what it may "Potentially" look like when added to the Site.

 Definitely think that the Drop Shadow Behind the Font is Important too. I would say about 85-90% websites have some type of shadow behind their sites main Fonts. JMO Though!  ;)

EDIT: If you guys think that the Banners Background Should Match the Color Scheme of the Forums Blue a bit more I can Tweak that into the Right Range. Not a Problem. We'll address that once a Banner Alyout has been Perminantly Selected!

I think the banner should be a Parachromis species (I'm not picky on which one) eating a Mbuna.  ;) :P

 Well, I'm working on something right now that will reflect the logo of the Parent Site... Should be ready in a day or so...

 Okay, So it was a little Faster than I expected... So let me know how it turned out...
I Copied the Logo idea from the main site but altered it a bit... http://www.michigan.cichlid.freeservers.com/ (http://www.michigan.cichlid.freeservers.com/)

Let me know what you all think... I tried to match the colors together with the site and fish in the logo. So if you like it, maybe take a vote or something to see if everyone else agrees that it suits the site and we'll figure out how to post it IF it's possible. If people are against it, then we'll see what else we can come up with for a Site Banner. Once again, please keep in mind that this only took me a few hours or so to whip up out of thin air... (newer software)

 P.S. The Cyphotilapia Gibberosa in the Logo Is One of my Bigger Male Moba's out the F1 Colony that I have.  ;)

The banner looks really nice either way but......
IMHO I think the fish selection would look nice with a little more color variation.  Maybe replace the Protomelas taeniolatus with a Labidochromis caeruleus "Electric Yellow".
And I would be happy to donate a picture of Godzilla (Vieja argentea) to appease the "Bruiser" request by Blair...even though it's a wimpy SA, not a CA  :P.

 I want to address the Logo as it was takin from the Main site and is representing the Original Logo from that site as closely as possible.

So I was trying to make it look as Accurate as Possible... I'm not sure if the Bottom Cichlid is a Salvini though in the Original.. What do you guys think?

Both look good.  I like C, because there's more fish and it looks complete without a crowded look to it.

I do agree with Tony about removing the Protomelas from the front, I bet an Electric Yellow would complement the other fish pretty well.

Would you be able to show me a version without the watermark and the shadowing behind Michigan Cichlid Association?  Just curious to see if it looks better.

I like the first one the best by far. The others seem to get more cluttered.

I'd also suggest moving the star on the map over towards the heart of the MCA, otherwise people are going to think they operate in Lansing if they're looking close enough.  ;)

It looks really nice.  The only suggestions that I would make is to remove the dashed circle from around the fish.  I don't think it really needs to be there and takes away from the fish.  I would also remove the Discus from the last version.

Otherwise, it looks like you do this type of thing for a living and if not maybe you should.

Okay gang. I fixed the Text on the others and added 2 more.

 Although the Electric Yellow Adds some "pop" to the Logo, it seems to control the focus of the Banner. Not Sure if this a Good Thing or bad thing, depending on what everyone thinks would be more Logical as to what the Focus Should be on. Artistically speaking, the res Empress seems to kee the Banner more Balanced, overall, in eye movement and keeps the Whole Banner as a Facal Point. As opposed to the Electric Yellow Taking that Focus on by itself.

 But Honestly as a Community I think that a Vote on it would be Fair fro all members as this is how most Forums moderators would attempt to keep members feeling like they have a say. Kind of like "we the people"...  ;)

Thanks! Oh I wouldn't have minded. I have been involved in Threads that are Literally hundreds of Pages long. Like, I'm talking 600-700 by the time that I stopped adn it's still going to this day and is closer to 1000 now!

 I noticed that there are 2 votes for [E] and "0" for [C] and [J] can you add those votes as well? Thanks Marty! Or was that the 2 that Chose [C] but changed their vote because The Bear was awake! lol

I do think that Everyone should have a fair vote though and that was a great addition! Not sure if people will actually take your seriously or not...  ;)  ;)

I wanted to vote for A-1, but there isn't an option in the poll.  :-\

It's probably too late, but to suggest a mix of existing options into an option --> I like the front/angel/E.yellow combo, but with either a solid or non-existent circle, don't care on the water mark, no discus/para-jag-thingy because they make it too busy, and U of M font colors ... not sure where the origin for the blue/orange is coming from unless it's simply because it's the default simplemachines color scheme.  8)

 The reason that I went with Orange Font Border was to match a bit with the Forums hit of Orange. but Yeah, I figured that some would like Yellow for the UofM Font!

IMHO this thread is already too cluttered. I think it would have been better to move the potential choices to a separate thread with the voting poll only....no other replies, etc.
Also, I think there are way too many choices and it should be simplified by the opinions from the original thread.
I didn't vote because I'm not sure which letter goes with which option. Too many added options apart from the others.
My 2 cents for the banner....solid oval, drop shadow, no water mark, Electric Yellow instead of the Empress.
The Parachromis looks good but the Discus looks out of place to me. Also, the pic of the Moba has great color but I do not like the dorsal fin lying flat...it takes away the elegance of that species of fish.
I was going to offer a great pic of Godzilla but for some reason Photobucket is being a prick on this computer I am using.

  Thereads a Thread really. I can uinderstand where you're coming from but the Ifrst post was altered to give direction to the Page of Choice. I can put them on the first Post if you like which does indeed make sense. I'll go ahead and do that now. Each Banner is Labelled with a Letter of "A" through "J" although A-1 was left out. Which isn't a big deal, beasue it's just a change in Font color. The rest have discriptions of what they are and the change that made to them in Parentheses.

 It's Pretty simple. Just choose the Banner that Has the most of what you like and vote for it.

 As far as the Fish in the MCA logo, they are almost Identicle to what the Parent Sites Original Logo is. And I think that it's respectable to keep that as accurate as possible. like I said, call me old Fashioned.  ;)

 There are some with Drop Shadow, Some without. Some hav a Certain combination of the Fish and some with others. Some with one type of oval and some with another... LOL- See simple!?  :P

 Good thing that I didn't make each banner with each option then... There would have been about 50 to choose from! lol

 A, A-1, B, B-1, C, C-1, D, D-1, Etc... LOL

The header and footer aren't global by default?! Looking at different pages for comparison, it appears that the header is always the same. It shouldn't be hard to locate the file wherein the current name text is being directed and replace it with the image.

So according to the discussion forums, I would suspect that there's an easy way to add the header through the control panel, similar to some variation of what is being discussed here: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=311936.0

I did download the installer to check out the file structure and believe my hypothesis from my previous post is true. The file you'd need to modify is default/index.template.php and the function is template_body_above ... and then the rest of my reply is constantly cut off despite showing up in the preview perfectly fine. Does this happen to anyone else?!?!?!??!? Talk about being frustrating!!!!

Marty I can email you the code that should be changed if you want to hand modify it since I can't seem to get it to show up in this post.

It's not, which is why I stumble my way through when I'm doing new things.  I'm going to muddle through it, I just haven't had time to do so yet.  I'd like to find a time when I have a few hours to dedicate to it so when the inevitable problem pops up, I have time to fix it and get the site running properly.
