I picked up a ten gallon hood used and the light does work so well. Almost not at all. I took it apart. The ballast is not one of those circular ones that you can unscrew. It is a metal box ballast. The brand is aqueon. I can sometimes get the light to go on but if I shut it off no more. It doesn't flicker or anything when it fails. I checked for loose wires. I'd like to get it working if I can so if tou have any ideas lmk.

Could be a bad bulb or bad on and off switch or the bulb is not seated right. BTW those circular things you unscrew are not a ballast, it's call a starter.

I would have just called it the "round thingy" 😂😊

Sometimes cheap lights will rust on the wire contacts in there ballast. Best solution Ebay cheap strip leds that you can customize to your housing.
