Looking for some advice. I purchased a fluval 306 online and the gasket that came in the package was too big and would not seal correctly.
I went to Highland Tropicals today and purchase a new one. Got it to my office and it is too long as well.
There is probably a half inch of slack in both seals.. I have no idea what to do. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I'd take the gasket back to Highland and take the filter too...and have them figure it out

Did you buy this brand new or used? If new, Fluval had good customer support helping my mom with an issue on a 304 years ago (something to do with the handle/clamp IIRC - not a gasket issue, but an issue with their product no less).
If you bought it used, well, you bought it used. Contact the seller or figure it out yourself. Maybe taking the filter into Highland tropical they can help better, but, and not suggesting you would, I wouldn't be rude about them selling you the gasket which is also too large. Something doesn't add up.

Maybe you have a 206

Easy fix. Take the gasket and cut it, then overlap it and make it like it millimeter to long. Then match up the ends by making perfect cuts and use cyanoacrylate superglue and glue the ends together. Will work just fine. All you need is a small dot in the middle of one end and let it dry overnight.

Great DYI Drew...but it's a new gasket. He should just take it back to Highland and the filter. Bob will be able to see what the problem is...maybe he's got the wrong number, like Dan says. It's probably something simple...just have fresh eyes look at it. Can't hurt.....God knows I need someone to look things over at times.

SMH ::) You will be better off taking the filter and gasket you bought back up to Highland Tropical.
Bob can figure out what's going on for you.

The filter is definitely a new 306. I'll call the company today on my lunch break and see if they have any suggestions.
If they can't help me, then I'll drive back out to Highland Tropicals with the whole unit. Those guys seemed very knowledgeable and extremely helpful.
I appreciate all the feedback and ideas. I'm sure it will get worked out one way or another. I'll keep ya updated.
Thanks again.

Yeah Guess that makes sense. If you can't get it figured out, that's what I'd do. I evidently read a little to quickly. ;)
Sorry about your troubles.
EDIT: Well if it's 2 of them that you purchased new and they both come with a jacked up gasket, call fluval directly or just do like I suggested and fix it.
What are the odds of you getting 2 of them like this. Sounds like a factory design...

Got it fixed! Thanks for all the suggestions! I was able to call and they helped me understand the issue!

Glad you got it fixed. Care to share what they determined? Maybe someone else could benefit from your contact.

I was hoping this question didn't arise!
I was trying to tuck the gasket in around the lip of the top. Hard to explain, but apparently I was trying to put it in the wrong spot. It needed to be just set along the rim, and not actually tucked in.
Bottom line, both gaskets fit and I am special. At least the woman on the phone was nice enough, she said they get it all the time and it's her favorite phone call because of how easy the fix was.

I am special.
Why be regular? Everybody always wants the special..

;D well I didn't mean to call you out but it seems like it's a common occurrence according to the company rep.

Thanks y'all. That was pretty embarrassing!

No reason to be embarrassed dude, great group here, we all learn from each other, nothing more or less ;)

Thanks. This group has definitely been very helpful. My tank wouldn't be where it's at today without the help of people in this forum. I now just need to get my butt down to watch an auction or attend a meeting!

LOL, "watch an auction"....I don't think that's even possible :o
-
Haha! I only have one tank running currently, so I think I'd be able to hold myself back.... maybe??
-
maybe....but just barely a maybe, LOL

There's always room for one more fish...tank...
When you see a fish you want, all reasoning disappears especially at auctions
