Title: Fish market in Brazil
Post by: greg y on November 13, 2015, 06:44:18 PM
No offense intended by this post, I just thought it was weird to see these monsters in the market today. I'm visiting family in Brazil.

Huge Pacu and some sort of large catfish.

Interesting how geographical location influences what we think of fish at a market. Thanks for sharing.

Were there any turtles at the market?

No, never seen any turtles, they're really big on beef here.
The bakeries are amazing too.

Too bad you don't have time to go live fish collecting and bring back some nice ones.  I can think of a few I'd look for.

Reminds me of when I lived in West Africa and saw fish for sale that we keep in the hobby. It's all about perspective I suppose. :)

I didn't do a lot of research but I did google it and it appeared that Brazil's rules for that were a lot harder than other South American countries. I'm going to try to hit a pet store and maybe the Aquarium here in Sao Paulo. I'll take photos and report back.

Sounds like it'll be interesting.....take lots of pics.  Get prices, that should be interesting too.

I was always told that pacu are a staple food fish in parts of SA.  Tom-ba-Qui was the name used.

Ok, so I hit a couple tropical fish - aquarium stores today. Both pretty high end with impressive coral and saltwater displays. I was a little disappointed in the lack of S. American - Central American fish and cichlids. One store had some monster arrowannas, cats and snakeheads but not many plecos at all. I'm thinking the main aquarium in town would likely be a disappointment as well so I'll probably skip it.

Here's a few pics, I'll post more and a few videos when I get back in town.

I think you've got to take a step back. In S. America, S. American fish aren't exactly exotic. They eat those S. American fish. Go into a US LFS and how many bluegill, redear, pumpkinseed, bass, various darter species, etc, do they have?

I expected more tetras, angels, plecos etc...
Anyways, here's some pics from the second store.

Is this a snakehead fish that is banned in N. America?

Not a snakehead, but an arapaima. It was featured on River Monsters a time or two....

I've hear of places in Florida where you can catch pretty much the same fish as there.....Someday I'll find out myself
