I keep plants with my africans...they only eat em if they're hungry in my experience...small feeds 3 times daily...biggest issues is getting plants that tolerate the higher pH and also the fish digging and displacing plants in substrate...I have anubias & java fern anchored to my rock work...both when mature are tough & fibrous so the fish leave em alone. That's my experience anyway for what's it's worth...

I've never had fish eat them. But like danotaylor said. Digging is a big problem. Plants should be anchored to something vs buried in your substrate.

My trick for digging is to put the plants in takeout containers buried in the gravel. I put them to the side, let the fish dig up the middle and everyone is happy.  They will snack if they get super hungry, but that tends to be at a minimum.
