Title: Pinned Thread for the Sales Forum
Post by: GrizzlysDad on March 12, 2012, 05:53:48 PM
INTEGRITY and COMMON COURTESY

I know this may seem overkill for something as minor as sales on a fish forum, but...it still comes down to common courtesy and your personal integrity.
If you commit to buying an item via PM or by posting a reply in another member's thread, follow through with it!!!
Or if you offer a deal to another member, follow through with it!!!
If you are the buyer or seller and wish to back out of the deal, it's simple...let the other party know!!!
This happens way too often on all fish sites. I propose that we attempt to make this site the exception to the status quo.
I suggest this simply be added to the rules section in our For Sale Forum.

Dude... I'm sorry.  I can't buy those 20 L46's you brought in for me.  My dog ate my money.

On a serious note.  I agree.  People are way too flaky sometimes.

I don't know how we could incorporate this into the rules.  There are so many facets to buying and selling a live animal such as fish, I don't know that it would be something that we would want to get into unless there is some kind of fraud involved.

I would be more inclined to incorporate a review or rating system to let people judge for themselves.  I think that might open another can of worms, but I think over time, site members would be able to tell the difference between a disagreement and a person who has a habit of not acting honestly.

In the meantime, let's keep in mind whether you're buying or selling, try to be considerate of the other party.  If something happens, regardless of what it is, at least contact the other party so they can make a decision about whether to continue with the transaction or move on and be able to do so in a timely fashion.

I guess you're right Marty, it would be difficult.
But frankly, I am sick and tired of people being flakes.
In the last month I have been screwed over by too many so-called "guaranteed buyers" and sellers too.
There's even a favorite LFS that has taken advantage of my friendship with no apparent care in the world.
Maybe it's time for one of my sabbaticals from the hobby  ::)

Sorry to read about the difficulties dealing fish. I find it's about a 50% chance of things going well. Half the time people I meet are great and the other half it's a huge pain, hence I don't often list things for sale often. Spending the time and going out of my way for a few bucks and a disappointing experience isn't worth it to me.

The trader rating system might work well, but as Marty mentioned, could be difficult handling disagreements in perception. The more stringent review for new users on here might help prevent those who'd receive negative rating from creating new accounts, unless they're tech-oriented.

I've run into some of them as well. I don't know what else to do but keep my own list of people I will not even respond to if they reply to one of my ads. It may seem rude on my part but like many of you, I'm tired of some folks not following through.

I also have a private list and I'm sure some of the people on it realize they need not ask for anything from me.

I do think the rating system is a good idea...as long as both parties participate and leave feedback.

The key when selling stuff here or anything else on craigslist is don't go out of your way.  If its not convenient for you than don't do it.  If your buying something for someone else get the money up front.  Go into every transaction assuming the buyer is going to flake out so that you can be pleasantly surprised when they don't.

Some nice Discus where available about a month ago.  But by the time they would have arrived it would have been a couple days before I left town for a week.  Then I got back in town and have been sick / not wanting to deal with it.  Probably best I just wait till I move anyways.  Assuming I ever find a place.  LOL.

Shhh!!!! Jeff doesn't know it, but he's on my list :o

Actually, Marty jokingly mentioned getting the discus from me just to tease Jeff with them.

Sometimes I just need a breather  ;D. But with the weather warming up I have been out hiking this year already. Hiking and backpack camping along with fishing is my way to relieve stress. ;D

The bad part is that the aquarium fish hobby is supposed to be RELAXING, LOL
It's not supposed to stress me out  ???

If you have been a buyer or a seller you know you have changed your mind for one reason or another....I had a 90 gallon for sale and received many PM's and no one called when I gave them my number....How many times I see some thing on sale go to buy it and my car needs the money ...my wife needs the money...my kids... or maybe I bought too much food.... This is one of the pleasures we are able to enjoy with extra cash....some times there are other priorities . To judge some one who wants to buy  from us and can not, because some thing more important came up is a bad thing... I have tried to be up front with all buyers and sellers and let them know what is happening ...and I hope all are up front with me...any thing I post on this site...Is to make others enjoy this Hobby like I have for over 40 years...If I get up set for not selling something I should get out of the hobby....The stuff I sell is to get it out to some one cheap and not just for profit....All the time and money we put out is never coming back...This is spending money on our selves... For our HOBBY...Getting others to enjoy also...
OK thats' my two cents.....

You have some good points.

Im pretty sure he is talking more about the people who reply to a sale thread saying they want it,  they never show/ call/PM,  then the same person will start a want to buy thread for the same item/items.
