I'm not looking forward to this, but at least MDOT is trying to gather public opinion on whether I-96 is shut down completely for a shorter duration or remains partially open for a longer duration. If this impacts you, voice your opinion here:
http://www.96fix.com/
In their project updates section, dated 03/01/2012, there is a direct link to the survey.
If they could get it done in less than a year, I would be willing to put up with it being shutdown completely, but beyond that I think it's mandatory they keep it partially open.

Partially open would be my opinion, although it doesn't really affect me.
I'm just imagining the extra traffic that would be on the surface roads. Even with it being part open
-
My thought would be to shut down one side at a time and keep it open for as long as possible.
By that, I mean keep the road open while rehabbing the bridges (perhaps shut down lanes on nights/weekends) and then shutdown as necessary to remove/replace bridges and then completely shutdown to replace the road. Then, tear out exit/entrance ramps in a sequence of first, third, fifth, etc. then second, fourth, sixth, etc. so you don't have to go to far if your exit is closed.

This is for 96 not 696...

Good call - post edited. :-[
I'm not sure if I'm more or less happy that it's I-96 rather than I-696. I rarely take I-96 through the portion where the work is being done, but now traffic on I-275 and I-696 will be worse than it already is. :(
