Title: Paralabidochromis chromogynus piebald
Post by: Dan K on March 02, 2012, 04:31:15 PM
Another of my favorites.............got a trio from Pruess last August. They were only about an inch long and kind of pricey but I'm glad I did it. They are beginning to breed now.

With his girls.....the one way in back behind the rocks has been holding for 4 days. I'm hoping for success this time. Last time (her 1st) she only held 3 days.

They were in the 55 gal. that I had your K-golds floating in when you came. I got 1m/2f.....even at about an inch the staff at Pruess were able to be reasonably sure of sex and it worked out great. The females have a little more of a yellow/green hue to them versus this silvery male who also has red edges on his fins and tail.

I get to Ann Arbor once a year in December/January. If I get more spawns by then maybe I'll be able to bring a few along.

P.S. I didn't find them on the west side.....got 'em in Lansing.

I just picked up a breeding trio of these today for a breeder in Ohio, hopefully they will spawn in a few weeks once they settle in.

I just picked up a breeding trio of these today for a breeder in Ohio, hopefully they will spawn in a few weeks once they settle in.

I hope it works out well for you! I have had some trouble getting fry from mine. I lost 1/2 of the first batch by putting the fry in with nyererei fry that were spit just a day or two earlier. The piebald fry are quite small! Mine also release so early, beginning at 15 days. I've lost a batch or two in the main tank because of this.

I had success with the last batch by putting mamma in a ten gallon by 10 days and letting her spit there. She spit at 15 days and took them back and spit again for two days before I removed her and these seem to be doing fine. Only 5 this time though  :(

No wonder they are somewhat hard to find....after growing and working with them for a year I've only got 11 fry.

On the plus side they spawn within 3 weeks of releasing now and she's holding again  :)

What size tank are they in and what species are there tankmates?  Right now I have them in a 30L by themselves.

They are in a 55 with a trio of albino Tropheops macrophthalmus and 8 Ps. saulosi that are going to Super Turtleman on the 17th. Then I plan on throwing in eight 2.5 inch Ps. aurora that I picked up as small fry at an auction and have been raising in a grow out tank.

Now how did I know that would come from you?? ;D  Short answer....I'm hoarding them for now  ;)
I plan to beef up the breeding group before offering any for sale. I only have 6 fry at 1 inch and 5  at 1/4 inch. One female holding and the 2nd about to spawn. I have yet to get a successful batch out of the 2nd female so it's kind of slow going. You'll be at the top of my list when they're available.

Do you notice your male being rough with the females?  I have them in a 30L and think I may need to add another species with them.  Any suggestions?  I know the tank size doesn't leave me a lot of options.  May need to move them to a 55 or 40B.

Actually my females seem to attack the male...they pounce on him from the side or behind but never do any damage. They also face off and challenge him with open mouth at times. He is nearly twice their size so they are scrappy little Bs! Only when breeding does he chase them, but he doesn't seem to nip them. He charges them but then backs off flashing his fins and trying to lure them to his spot. I recall him beeing more domineering when I had them in a 36" tank.

They are supposed to get some fish in for me today and then quarantine them for a week so I'll be heading out there sometime next week.

I'm a happy camper........my female released 20+ fry today right on her 15 day schedule; last time she only had 5 good ones and two bent ones that I culled.

I'll leave her in with them a few days again as she is still scooping them back up when I come near. It's amazing how these little buggers have no hint of a sac anymore at only 15 days!

I got my trio at 1-1.5 inches almost a year ago and have been impatiently waiting for them to grow and get on track with breeding but now it's all coming together.  :P :) ;D

The 2nd female is holding again too; hopefully this will be her first successful hold.

Wow, those are some beautiful fish right there. It always amazes me how the lesser known fish seem to be the sweetest.
