Title: highland tropical
Post by: timmyho on March 01, 2012, 07:40:20 PM
just got back from Highland tropical, and it was my first visit there.  I went there on the advice of Grizzlydad- And I have to say I was very impressed.  It is a small store, but they had a lot of hard to find cichlids, and the man there seemed to know his stuff.  I bought my male rostratus, and I am very happy I found this store.  If you have not checked it out, you might want to make a trip here.  I will be returning, and I think i enjoyed this store as much if not a little bit more than preuss pets. 5 stars!

You know, I've been there in excess of 20 times, and I don't think I've ever seen a dirty tank or sick fish.

ok,  maybe ill just respond to my own post 40 times haha  but when I was there, it looked like 90 percent of the tanks were nice and clean, the exception being the tanks on the very top row, which they didn't look that bad, but not quite as algae free as the rest. And I thought the prices were pretty fair too.  I didn't see any sick fish, but My main focus was the big male rostratus that is now at home with me!

I'm pretty surprised by this comment.   ???  I've always thought highly of Highland Tropical and the level of quality that their fish manager maintains.  I consider HT as one of the best cichlid stores in Michigan.

Sure you're not thinking of a different LFS? Over the last 10-12 years I've been in there 40-60 times and their fish were always in great shape. The selection is usually great and the prices reasonable.

I been there many times fish are nice and healthy nice selection of ever changing fish ( usally a bit pricey but thats why I now buy from breeders) most people that work there are knowelegable about fish but it dosent really seem( to me) that they appreciated by buisiness or were very freindly for as many times as I had been there.  still 4 stars and worth going

That like calling a car dealership pricey while comparing them to private party transactions! There's a cost for retail space, employees, etc. Compared to other LFSs, the pricing is good for the quality/availability/selection when compared to other LFSs.

I just went there while I was down for the last meeting. This was probably the best store I have been too. Great selection, great prices and a very knowledgeable proprietor.

Just found out that the owners of Royal Tropical Fish in Royal Oak are related to the owners of Highland Tropical Fish, (Doo Makes sense now after seeing the names). I would put both locations up as the top five in the area.  Bruce's Pond Shop, the Aquarium Shop and Mody Dicks as the others. I have been to them all over the past 3 months. These 5 stick out as the cream of the crop.

Family relations, yes. Business affiliation, no.
Both are not only great stores but both owners are great people.

They helped me setup my office tank.  They were helpful with picking out a nice mix of peacocks and haps.  All the fish were in good shape with no losses (which I think is good for a new tank).

I've been to a large number of fish stores in the past few weeks and Highland Tropical tops the list. Friendly, Knowledgeable, Clean and Well Stocked.

x2 or x20 on Bob. Dude knows his cichlids. It's a bit of a journey for me, but I always stop if passing by while they are open. I picked up some siamese algae eaters a few weeks ago and they are doing great.

I stopped by this store and thought it was a very good place. I ended up buying seven cichlids.
Took the extrea time to pack them up for the long ride home.
I live 45 minutes away. Good people and very helpful.
