I'm hearing rumors that they are building a massive Aquarium exhibit there (not just one tank)
I drove by it on the freeway and saw the outside of the mall having fish painted all over it.
Does anyone have any deatails?
Probably going to be a huge tourist attraction for all those bus tours...
-
Yep I read about it back in September. It's supposed to be open sometime next year http://www.freep.com/story/money/business/michigan/2014/09/22/big-aquarium-groundbreaking-set-today/16074037/

Drove by the other day. It's the side of the mall facing I-75 closer to the movie theater end. All painted up bright blue with a variety of sea creatures. I can't wait.
-
I believe that it's going to be something along the lines of a Ripleys aquarium. With the tunnel where fish and other aquatic wildlife are able to swim all around and over top of you.

Was just discussing this with my boyfriend the other day!! Opens in about a month!

Here's the article I saw back in March...

Sounds cool, hopefully they have some fresh water fish there too.
-
Yep they are supposed to have some native Michigan species as well. Found today where they are selling "pre-tickets". The pre ticket admission cost is $17.50. So normal addmission cost is probably gonna be at least $20 per person >:( I'll pay that to go see it when it's open, but at that price it'll probably only be a once per year thing for me. The pre opening date says Jan 24/25 for pre ticket buyers. So should be open to the public by Feb 1st from the sounds of it.

Pretty cool stuff, looks like the Aquariums at Great Lakes Crossing are gonna be open in just a couple weeks now. Sharks got there a few days ago 8)

Sea Life out at Great Lakes Crossing opened up the other day. Anyone planning on checking it out soon? I'll probably head out in a couple weeks to check it out myself once all the crowds have thinned out a bit.
-
I had the same plan. Although, if you brave the storm and go today, I heard you can meet Sponge Bob Square Pants. lol
-
I'll go when they add the Cichlid exhibit. ;)

Hey Blair does sea world have one of those! lol
-
I agree with Blair. It would be awesome if they had Cichlid exhibits.
BTW, on SeaWorld, they don't seem to have Cichlids, but Shedd Aquarium (in Chicago) has them in their Waters of the World exhibit. http://www.sheddaquarium.org/plan-a-visit/Explore/Exhibits/Waters-of-the-World/ (http://www.sheddaquarium.org/plan-a-visit/Explore/Exhibits/Waters-of-the-World/)

Sea Life ticket pricing strikes me as a bit pricey relative to other aquariums. I'm curious if it'll come down in time as they help pay for their initial expenses of opening and public interest possibly wanes.
-
Same here Ron, $23.50 is a bit pricy when you consider that they say it's a 60 minute or so experience. When I go my Niece, Sister and her family want to go (6 of us) that's about $140. They need to drop that ticket price by about 25% to bring it to a more reasonable level IMO.
-
Disney World FL Animal Kindom has tons of African Cichlids. They are not Cichlid Exhibits unfortunately. They are in like the Hippo exhibits and the like. But there ate places where you can see them. Pretty cool seeing massive Lab Caeruleus and others.
-
Has anyone been to this aquarium yet? If so, what'd you think? I was thinking of going on a date there tonight but I don't want to go if it's underwhelming.

We tried to go Saturday too! That line was incredible...luckily I had some shopping to do so it wasn't a complete waste. Definitely planning ahead next time!

We took our boys on the youngest ones birthday. Got there late afternoon on Friday and walked right in.
I loved the place. Displays were great, setup was excellent.
That being said, I doubt I will go back anytime soon unless my sons really talk me into it. Way to expensive.
We were in there about 45 minutes and really took our time. Without the boys, probably 30min would have been it.
The price REALLY disappointed me.
Be sure to get tickets ahead of time to save some money.

I'm having my son's 5 year old birthday party there. Not bad pricing, it comes out to $12 each person, with some prizes and games. There is a min. of 20 people.
I'll let you all know how it goes.
One of my friends tried to buy tickets on-line last weekend and it was completely sold out.
-
Just had a party there. For most of us it is underwhelming. It's mostly salt water, most of the tanks are small and they seemed to reuse them by using the "window" effect in separate rooms (so it looked like there were more tanks). also there was a very small variety of fish there, lots of repeats in tanks.
There were only a few really big tanks. They used a lot of gimmics like glass bubbles and takes that kids could go underneath.
If I just walked through the place with out looking at anything it would have taken only 5 minutes. Since it was crowded and my kids were there it took about 45 minutes.
The price should be about $14.99.
Kids had a good time, but as fish enthusitic you won't be impressed.
