Title: Thoughts on mixing wild caught in with show tank
Post by: Saulosi77 on August 23, 2014, 10:02:03 PM
I don't have any wild caught fish but found a couple wild caught aulonacara I do not have.  Any thoughts on mixing a wild caught male in my all male show tank.  I know every fish has different personalities.  I've heard some wild caught fish carry diseases and can be extremely aggressive.  Any advice appreciated.  Looking at aulonacara Santa bay wild caught.

Aulonocara stuartgranti 'Sanga Point'?   It shouldn't be too much different from any other stuartgranti type.

You're welcome.   I thought autocorrect might be the issue. ;)

As far as Aulonocara go...  They're all laid back. You may run into trouble if you have any larger jacobfreibergi types or hybrid species.  But, usually aggression can be minimized using a lot of rockwork & proper stocking levels.

Wild fish can carry disease or parasites, but hopefully the collector and importer (and perhaps a distributer) should have hopefully weeded out most of the carriers. You should quarantine just like you would with any fish from a different source (though we all don't do this as often as we should and many don't have issues).

As for aggression, chances are that it's a little more assertive than a typical tank raised fish. It did presumably have to survive in the wild for some time. I wouldn't worry about it too much though unless you're trying to put it in a little tank. Like RegalBlue said, rockwork and proper stocking in a responsibly-sized tank, and it should be alright.
