I called a guy to ask about a tank he had for sale today. We got to talking about fish and he said he fed his Africans puppy chow. I'm looking to do this but, have any of you guys tried this? He claimed that they did wonderful on it because of the protein. Im quite skeptical.

wouldn't surprise me yet if I had to guess I'd say it wasn't the best choice but who knows, I have not check the ingredients.

I wouldn't do it.
Not sure how well fish digest chicken by products, corn, ect...

A few years ago I read about one of those monster tanks (something like 35K gallons) somewhere in Europe. The guy had HUGE SA fish. Part of this daily feeding included like a 40lb bag of dog food. I didn't think it was the best idea for those fish and say no way to Africans as they are way to small to be chomping down on a big piece of dog food.
Technically there isn't much difference with how a fish food pellet is formed and a piece of dog food. Only difference is the ingredients. If I was going to feed my fish dog food I would choose something better than puppy chow.

I use cat food on one tank for big fish and they did great, Just dont put a lot in at one time, It will cloud the water. Also start slow a few chunks here and there. When its gone add more.

You would need to at least use a grinder IMO.
I've heard of this for pond fish. I'm sure the cichlids in your tank would live for a while fed dog food, but would they live as long and be as healthy as they're suppose to? I wouldn't suggest using it.
