Title: Sun Sun cannister filters
Post by: fishandcards on May 13, 2014, 07:04:44 PM
Has anyone tried these?  The price is so much cheaper, but I wonder if they are any good.  You find them on e-bay.

I read a review on another forum by someone who bought one.  It was favorable taking into account the price.  Someone else replied theirs was two years old and still going strong.

I know they are probably not as good as an FX5 or FX6, but it is way cheaper.

I would just look on craigslist for a used FX5.  You could probably pick one up for around $100.00-150.00

They have a proven track record of being reliable.  Has anyone here had one fail on them?

I own a 265 gph aquatop which is basicly the same as Sunsun. I'd figure on using this pump for the same reasons cheaper and efficient. Performance is almost identical to my Fluval 306. These aquatop pumps though are made with cheap components and there is considerable blowby in the baskets. I use my own media and clean it a little more often than the Fluval but i'm satisfied. Overall though for the price it works great and i'd buy another. Even if the pump didn't last as long as the Fluval i'd rather buy one of these Aquatops new over a used pump regardless of manufactuer.

They are absolute junk, I have at least 4 non working 526gph models in boxes in my garage.. not one of them lasted more than a year... the first died after 27 days, the other 3 followed soon after. The company repeated dodged my emails and calls, then when I finally got someone to approve the RMA they wanted me to pay to ship it to them and to pre-pay shipping and handling to send it back.. It is also worth mentioning that the 500+ gph unit only moves about 1/2 the amount of water it claims. They are cheap, flimsy crap.. there is a reason they change the name every year and sell them under another brand...... just my 2 cents.

Okay then  ;D lol

I always wondered myself, but wow, that ends the wondering for me.

My 2 cents ... I have a Filstar XP4 that I've had for about 3 years for my 125g and the previous owner also used for a while.  These are relatively inexpensive and I've had great luck with it.  I keep on waiting for it to break so I can buy a fancy canister filter, but it just keeps on going.  I'd go with a nicer filter if you can, but at least this may be an option.   :)

Fluval, eheim and hot mags all great products in the world of canister filtration.
